Seeing something out of the ordinary is always something I yearn for. Especially when the sight consists of the things we haven’t seen for a very long time. How did we miss them? How it would throw us into remembering the good old days. Cherishing the good old times when most of the good things were simple and free, honest and practical. Even the cars back then were created for simplicity and practicality of daily use that every folks that can afford. That is where the term old but gold kicks in. To sample this, Malaysia and Singapore Vintage Car Register had 35 vintage cars convoy to please everyone who had missed these retro and classic cars on the move.
The convoy started at 8am from the vicinity of the Amcorp Mall to the Royal Malaysian Air Force Open Day in Sungai Besi for their annual celebration. As you could see from the pictures, there were only 35 selected vintage cars that were invited by the organisers. This was mainly due to space constraint. But what a selection of 35 vintage cars that were present! The convoy caused quite a jam but everyone that stopped was delighted to see these cars passing through one by one. We could see kids behind the windows gaping at the vintages in the likes of MG Rovers, Triumphs, a Bugatti, Chevrolets, Volkswagens, Jaguars, Volvos, Minis, Porsches and my personal favourite amongst all of them, a Citroen 2CV6. Never have I imagined seeing, hearing and touching this French classic right in my homeland.
The photo opportunity started as soon as they arrived at the event venue. Right from the gates to the runaway at the RMAF strip where the open day was held. In fact one of the open top Rovers was used to ferry the VIP for the officiating ceremony. After the 50 gun salute, the event went on with air shows by RMAF daredevils, paratroopers, helicopter flybys and as for these classics, they had a little gymkhanna and drag race session of their own. The capability of the classics shows how well they were restored or taken care of over the years. They were in such good condition, that most of our newer modern cars were put to shame.
The Malaysia and Singapore Vintage Car Register is vintage car club that has vast amount of members, the membership goes by the hundreds in this region ranging from all types of classic cars you could possibly imagine. All who participated that day had fun and they wished that all of their members could join them at the event. They are that united. Maybe there should be a concourse event for them soon? Well, we know that these folks would have no problem when it comes to being patient for everything classic. We hope it will happen soon and if it were, we will be right there to see these golden oldies again.
