Toyota Eco Youth 2009 Concluded

Shah Alam, Thursday, October 8th UMW Toyota Motor Sdn Bhd (UMW Toyota Motor), assembler, marketeer and distributor of Toyota passenger and commercial vehicles, today concluded the 2009 Toyota Eco Youth (TEY) programme at a two-day Convention and Exhibition held in Concorde Hotel, Shah Alam.

TEY is a major component of UMW Toyota’s annual Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme. Each year 16 secondary schools, each representing a state in Malaysia including the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya and Labuan, show off their environment management projects which is a culmination of a six months programme. Each school make presentation and showcased their projects.

“Our commitment extends beyond making our products safe and environmentally friendly. Toyota Eco Youth programme is a good example of this. Further, to create value in our initiatives for the environment, we seek to educate and instill a love as well as a sense of care for the environment in the nation’s youth,” said Haji Aminar Rashid Salleh, Executive Director, UMW Toyota Motor, during his opening remarks.


UMW Toyota Motor had developed the Toyota Eco Youth Programme, which began in 2001, to educate the youth on the importance of conserving the environment and inspire them to act responsibly towards the environment. “Toyota Eco Youth Programme has raised the awareness and appreciation for the environment amongst our youth, especially our school-going youth. This has benefited many of them throughout the years. To date, after nine years of implementation, a total of 136 schools, involving around 912 students, have benefited from this programme”, added by Haji Aminar Rashid.

Speaking about the Eco Youth Programe next year, Hj. Aminar said, “the Toyota Eco Youth will mark its 10th year anniversary. One of our improvements is to introduce the “Sustainability Award” to encourage this year’s participants to sustain their projects at their respective schools for the year 2010.


He mentioned, “For us at UMW Toyota, we want you to realize that the important message behind every Toyota Eco Youth programme is sustainability.” He stressed that caring for the environment requires a sustained effort.

He also wanted the participating schools to maintain their projects even when the convention is over. To the students, he share his thoughts about environment “Take this important message of environmental conservation, carry it with you throughout life and inspire others, especially your peers, with the same awareness.”

The closing ceremony was witnessed by Dato’ Alimuddin Mohd Dom; the Ministry of Education’s Director-General and Hj Aminar Rashid Salleh; Executive Director, UMW Toyota Motor.

The Toyota Eco Youth programme is a joint effort by UMW Toyota Motor and the Ministry of Education to cultivate environmental awareness and encourage respect for the environment among youth in secondary schools. The TEY programme was first started in 2001 as a major component of the environmental pillar under UMW Toyota Motor’s annual Corporate Social Responsibility programme. The other two pillars are road safety and philanthropy.
