Tougher battle in PFX final round at MMER

Published on August 3rd, 2010

Motor racing fans will get the opportunity to witness the future of Malaysia’s motorsports at the upcoming Merdeka Millennium Endurance Race (MMER) this weekend, as aspiring Formula 1 drivers at the PETRONAS Formula Xperience (PFX) gears up for their final battle.

Slotted as a support race for the MMER, the PFX class of 2010 had its first round of races at the Malaysian Super Series (MSS) over the weekend.

Sunday’s battle saw Muhammad Hiqmar Danial Hidzir emerging as the top performer, winning Race 2 after coming in second in Race 1.

Although he was delighted to lead the championship standings, Hiqmar, however, is expecting a more difficult battle at the MMER, especially from Tan Wei Ron, winner of Race 1.

“I am happy to be leading the championship. I hope to win the next two races at the MME and be selected to race for Mofaz Racing in the Formula BMW Sauber next season,” said Muhammad Hiqmar, who noted that it would not be an easy mission as the other drivers were equally strong.

“The MMER will be a great opportunity for me to prove myself, to see if I’m good. A lot of good drivers will be coming from overseas, so I hope that it will be my time to shine on the track and show what I am capable of,” he added.

Although he was unlucky in Race 2, Tan Wei Ron was superb in the opening race. Despite encountering tyre problems midway through the race, he managed to keep his composure to take the chequered flag ahead of Muhammad Hiqmar.

“It started pretty well, but after a few laps, there was just not enough grip for the car. I just kept focusing on my lap time and on finishing the race,” said Tan, when asked to comment on his victory in Race 1.

Fellow competitor, Jamal Arif Jamaludin who placed third in Race 1 and Race 2 is also looking forward to the race in the MMER this weekend.

“I’m going to give it my 200 per cent, I’m just going to go the extra mile and see where it would take me,” he said.

Apart from the PFX and the 12-hour endurance race, fans could also catch the Classic Car Series race, the other support race for the MMER.

The Petronas Formula Xperience (PFX) Racing School Series was created with the objective of nurturing these young racing talents into high-quality and professional race car drivers.

Modelled after Formula BMW’s Education and Coaching Programmes in Europe, the PFX Racing School Series serves to bridge the gap between karting and open-wheel single-seater formula racing.

Currently working with their fourth batch, the programme is designed to equip young racing talents aged 15 – 18 years old with the fundamentals of single-seater formula racing as they progress in their motorsports career.

Other up-and-coming young racers taking part in the Petronas Formula Xperience this year are Nik Azri Syazmi Nik Hamdan, Siti Shahkirah Shaharul, Jazlee Irfan Syah Jul Fazlee, Freddie Ang Ding Yu and Ahmad Yazid Bajenid Mohamed Tawfeek.

Some PFX graduates have moved on to Formula BMW Pacific with Mofaz Racing while others competed in the Japan Super Taikyu Series and the MMER under the PETRONAS banner.
