Touge for the hatches

Published on November 15th, 2010

I’ve been waiting for a touge session since I converted from an auto to manual tranny a couple of months back, and last Saturday a few people from EPMC posted a post on what to do during the Deepavali holiday, and someone suggested for a touge run.

After a few more posts, a few cancellations, only five cars turned up on Saturday morning. Since one of us didn’t want to take his Swift GT to the hills, only four cars went up. A Honda EF9, Starlet GT, Satria Neo and ’95 Satria made up our small entourage of hatch drivers.

Enche Ariel has recently sold his Evo3 and bought a red EF9 with B16A VTEC engine. Hafiz is driving a Toyota Starlet EP71 4EFTE 1.3L, Geg is driving a 1.6 Satria Neo with newly hardened DIY suspension, 17” rims and modified air filter, and I am driving a 1.8 SOHC Satria.

The morning started at our usual meeting point near UIA with Nasi Lemak and Roti Canai as our starters. After a few conversations, Ariel took the lead and head off towards Genting Sempah through the old Karak way.

The drive was nice and easy, with Ariel trying out his new ride and Hafiz right behind him. Geg had trouble from the start due to his tyres’ sidewall but managed to keep us in view.

As for me, I had fun learning how to control the car while oversteering, and I have to admit, it was scary at first. Memories of my late Astina are still fresh in my head, and every oversteer gave me a jolt in my stomach.

After a few times oversteering, I found the rhythm needed to control the car. When the rear tyre began to slip, I learned that you must not yank the steering hard the other way (counter-steering), but gently turn the steering wheel towards the right direction (which is the corner exit) and control the throttle gently. Do NOT brake, do not slam the throttle pedal, and most importantly not to panic. You’ll realise that you will be controlling the car and able to direct the car from plunging into that 150m ravine.

I found out that I could keep up with Ariel and Hafiz, provided there was nothing blocking my path. I can keep up, but my skills and setup are preventing me from catching up with them if I got left behind.

We stopped at our usual stop right before reaching Genting Sempah. Ariel found out that his EF9’s temperature control system might need a little repair as the pressure knocked the spare water tank cap open as the radiator water was not cycled properly.

After filling up the radiator water at the Genting Sempah Petronas, we continued towards Bukit Tinggi where we sat and chatted for a while, before refilling Ariel’s radiator again, and head down towards the other side.

The journey back was more fun, as I had more experience in handling oversteering situation and was fun counter-steering all the way. Geg had more trouble with his tyres, but managed to have as much fun as the rest of us.

Hafiz’s windscreen cracked when we were approaching Gombak, which caused him to burn close to RM200 in his pocket.

Video will be uploaded here soon. Enjoy the pictures in the meantime… and for those who want to have a bit of fun around the curves here and there, you’re more than welcome to join us in the next session.
