The Saga continues

Take a peek back into the old days of auto manufacturing and you just might notice how models stuck around for more than just a couple of years and facelifts were exactly how the dictionary defined them.

Nowadays, there’s news from the grapevine about the second facelift on a model before the first spruce-up has even been officially released.

Taking all this into account, a shelve life of 20 years is a somewhat remarkable achievement in today’s auto-making world that see curfews sweep over before the party’s even kicked off.

saga

A perfect example would be Zuffenhausen’s latest addition to the family. Just as Porsche’s getting its Panamera groove on there’s whispers from new owner’s Volkswagen that all the four-door models in their line-up might have their tunes switched off. Unfortunately, if proven to be true, it’ll spell the end for the Cayenne as well.

That depressing news aside though, cars like the Volkswagen Beetle (shows VW knows a thing or two about long shelve lives), Mini and Citroen 2CV have enjoyed more than 40 years of production with minor improvements, clearly demonstrating that if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

Recently, the boys over at Jalopnik have compiled a list of 50 cars that have survived the 20-year mark in the automotive world. As always with a list like this, there’s bound to be some griping and bitching about how a model made it to the list or why some were canned.

Interestingly, and rightly so might we add, some local pride got the dues it deserved as our very own Proton Saga found itself in the list. Admittedly, the Saga in no way possesses the nostalgic value of some of its peers on the list but in its own manner it’s definitely parked in a special spot in our hearts.

From the time it was launched back in 1985, it has proved to be a real people’s car, a sentiment that its third iteration still holds true to now.

Now we’re willing to bet our meager salaries that if you don’t own or have owned one, you definitely know of somebody that owns one or have driven one yourself. Come on now, you’re nodding your head in agreement already.

You can read up the list right here at http://jalopnik.com/5353157/the-ultimate-automotive-survivors-50-cars-made-for-at-least-20-years/gallery/ as the Saga shares some stage time with some of the automotive world’s most pivotal figures.
