The New Polo GTI is back

Published on September 2nd, 2011

The new Volkswagen Polo GTI has been launched in Malaysia, and now comes with more power and features, befitting its legendary badge.

The car’s superior handling characteristics are further epitomized with an equally responsive engine, but without compromising on the best safety features.

Upon its introduction in Europe in May last year, the Volkswagen brand broke new ground by launching the New Polo GTI as the first car to have its marketing launch via the social networking scene.

The New Polo GTI was launched in the Malaysian market after it was unveiled to the media by Volkswagen Group Malaysia Managing Director Mr Ricky Tay, in conjunction with the Scirocco R-Cup one-make race at the Sepang International Circuit, today.

Fuel Efficient

Never before has a powerful Volkswagen Polo come even close to its current fuel efficiency. Thanks to clever downsizing of the twin-charged 1.4-litre TSI engine (turbo plus supercharging) and the extremely efficient 7-speed Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG) as standard equipment, the development team was able to reduce combined fuel consumption to 5.9l/100km. This is equivalent to CO2 emissions of just 139g/km.

In comparison, its direct predecessor produced impressive power of 150PS from its 1.8-litre turbo engine and consumed 7.9 litres per 100 kilometres (equivalent to 188g/km CO2). This shows the New Polo GTI has 30PS more power and is 24 percent more fuel efficient.

Super Speed

This light 1,194 kilogram Volkswagen sports car accelerates to 100km/h in just 6.9 seconds and reaches a top speed of 229km/h. These figures, 6.9 seconds, 5.9 litres are sports car performance parameters of a sustainable kind.

Power in technology

Power is transferred to the front wheels via the DSG. An electronic transverse differential lock (XDS) reduces the tendency to under-steer and improves handling especially in quick driving through curves.

The Polo GTI also comes equipped with the standard ESP electronic stabilization program including Hill Hold Control.

Super Safety Features

In addition, the car’s extensive safety features consists of a highly effective airbag network, including combined head-thorax side airbags and twin front airbags, belt tensioners, belt tension limiters plus belt warning, head restraints designed to avoid whiplash trauma (each in front), three rear head restraints as well as Isofix points on the rear bench seat for suitably fitted child seats.

Sexy but Practical

In addition, convenience features include electro-hydraulic power steering, electric windows, central locking, boot-space light, leather-wrapped multi-function steering wheel with paddle shift, radio/CD/MP3 player with USB/iPod/AUX-In connectivity, driver seat height adjustment, make-up mirror in the sun visors and green tinted insulated glass.

The New Polo GTI will be the first Polo to be available with bi-xenon headlights with cornering lights, LED daytime running lights and corner marker lights as well as a panoramic tilt/slide sunroof.

Naturally, GTI-specific features are always standard too, such as the sport seat system and 17-inch alloy wheels in “Detroit” design.

The New Polo GTI comes in 6 different colours; Candy White, Flash Red and Black as solid shades, Reflex Silver and Shadow Blue as metallic colours and Deep Black with a pearl effect.

The car is available in either 3-door or 5-door.

The N ew Polo GTI has been priced at RM132,888.00 for the 3-door version while the 5-door version is priced at RM135,888.00. To add more value tot he ownership experience, the car comes with a 5-year unlimited mileage warranty plus a 5-year roadside assistance package.

The New Polo GTI is available at all authorized Volkswagen dealerships in the country.
