The Killerbees will sting when provoked!

Published on March 23rd, 2010

Killerbees has always been one of the aggressive bunch of over-enthusiastic car groups of its days back in the 90’s. Their turbocharged engines seem to give the modded Hondas goosebumps and Mitsubishis a run for their money during those days. So what had happened to them over these years?

Bees don’t hibernate do they? To our surprise, we were invited to their gathering at the scorching hot tarmac of Pasir Salak racetrack at Batu Gajah in Perak. And you know what they say about how the hot weather can accelerate the stinging effect and left you agitated to death. Yeah, death to boredom these guys gave to the folks there, ain’t that sweet. Stinging bees giving honeys from their sweet blow-off orchestra…

To those younglings out there, the Killerbees here was named after their ride’s engine code. Mazda named their in-line four cylinder engines with the B code since 1987 with the B1 in the Mazda 121 to BPT for the Mazdaspeed version of the Miata which is also the last of the bees before the new MZR engine was developed for their new batch of cars. And seeing them on the track that day brought us back to those years where the Familia, 323, Miata, MX3, even the Ford Lasers were the sought after names when it comes to street credit amongst the brave back then.

The Killerbees have been laying low as times goes by a few years back but they are still active in the forums with the occasional runs, the tarik sessions and other micro sporting events we shall not mention here. This time in Pasir Salak, they have unleashed their track days’ desires… running around testing their latest cars’ components to date, a test of stretching their stingers on the drag-strip and a free running for those who still have a little bit of venom left for the day. And mind you that most of them have reached over 300 horses under the hood with that four cylinder B engines.

And we just love hearing those turbines spooling and blow-offs going crazy at turns and straights in that not-so-big-a track in Pasir Salak (we need more race tracks, doggamit!) and for an insect that flies, they sure pack a lot of good food and beverage throughout the day to keep all of them bubbly to bumble around and buzzing despite the toasty heat.

All in all, the day went by pretty fast and ended with souvenirs and prize handouts to those who attended and to those who outshine the others on the track. Like most gatherings of such family-oriented activities, the day finished off with some good old fashion barbecue with them buzzing away into the night before heading off to their respective hives the day after. Killerbees, we want to hear more of that ear-splitting buzz in the streets and we are glad that your stingers are true, straight and venomous still. Keep on stinging, Killerbees.
