SUPER GT 2011 Concluded

Published on June 20th, 2011

We are still here in Sepang for Round 3 of SuperGT 2011, where things are cooling down around the track. People are changing into more comfortable clothes, while some took some time off from three days of frantic shooting, and finish off some of the curry puffs left on the trays at the media centre.

The day started with the track becoming slightly more expensive that it already is, with one of the largest Supercar gathering with 405 expensive-booty-licking cars lining up on the track and went for a spin around the track. I’m sure many of you have seen the YouTube video of a small accident happening during the lining up. Our hearts sank a few meters underground when it happened, and pray to the Tarmac God to have mercy on their repair bills.

The SuperGT race started at exactly 4:06pm, and Weider HSV-010 started from pole and gave it a perfect run all throughout the 46-laps.

The first position for GT500 class was snatched by Weider HSV-010 driven by Takashi Kogure and Loic Duval, and following behind was S Road MOLA GT-R driven by Matasaka Yanagida and Ronnie Quintarelli. On third position was KEIHIN HSV-010 driven by Toshihiro Kaneishi and Koudai Tsukakoshi.

GT300 overall winner was HATSUNEMIKU GOODSMILE BMW driven by Nobuteru Taniguchi and Taku Bamba, with second place taken by JIMGAINER DIXCEL DUNLOP 458 driven by Tetsuya Tanaka and Katsuyuki Hiranaka. On the third place was PACIFIC NAC IKAMUSUME Ferrari, driven by Yutaka Yamagishi and Hideki Yamauchi.

The weather was a little kind to us, but was a little tricky for the teams to really capture the best temperature for the tyres. Some of the teams commented that towards the end of the race, it was a little slippery for the cars due to tyre wear and less than optimum temperature.

For us beside-the-track dudes, we were more than happy with the weather, as some of us could skip applying lotions on our very fair skin.

The mall area is livelier this year, complete with the lovely Mari Ferrari DJ, among others DJs, pumping up the beat on Saturday night during the techno party Velocita, while another RnB party was going down 200 meters away at FemmeFatale. It was the first time any of us saw our editor, Botak danced to something. It was an ugly sight.

The crowd was fantastic too, but it did take a little bit of time before everyone started jumping up and down. We were all tempted to put down our gears and joined in the fun.

The fun was followed by hard-rocking Rock n’ Race concert after the race on Sunday night, and it was a whole helluva fun post-race concert. Too bad they didn’t allow us to go up on stage and screamed our hearts out, but then again, they crowd might just kill us then and there.

Chairman of JP Performance Motorsport, JP Chin, was more than pleased with the overall turn-up for the event, and is hoping to do more next year.

“I think we have certainly achieved our target of bringing a world of entertainment into the world of motorsports and I am pleased at the response we have received. We will be organising the SUPER GT here at SIC next year as well, and we will strive to make it even bigger and better,” he said.

Anyway, enjoy the pictures! Our usual video montage will be posted on the website soon.
