Street 1.8 VTEC/Turbo championship leader Ahmad Firdaus Azman asserted his dominance with a supreme drive in the rain at Round 7 of the Saturday Night Fever Series 2012 which was held on 10 November 2012 at the Sepang North Circuit.

The Klang Valley area has been inundated with exceptional amounts of rain this year, especially in the evenings, and it was always expected that it would turn out to be a wet race for Round 7.

With the rain coming down through most of the preliminary heats, Ahmad Firdaus set the pace as he lapped an amazing 3-seconds faster than the next quickest competitor in both of the first two preliminary heats. In typical race-paddock tradition, there were whispers of comparisons to great drives by the late Aryton Senna and Michael Schumacher, such was Ahmad Firdaus’ effortless pace.

In the final he simply blasted off into the distance from pole position, opening up a 2-second gap at the end of the first lap, and leaving newcomer Shamsul Yasin to battle with Phillip Tang for second. “Once I had a defendable gap, I dropped the pace to ensure I didn’t make any mistakes to take the flag,” said Ahmad Firdaus, displaying maturity and professionalism beyond what is assumed of many SNF street racers.

Phillip Tang managed to pull away to end in second, with Shamsul Yasin putting in a defensive fight to hold off Khair Nur Ariff / Tan Wai Loong for third.

In the Street 1.8 NA (Naturally Aspirated) category final, Gan Kim Koa made it two-in-a-row as he racked up another win ahead of Round 2 winner Johan Haron Jaafar. In third place and setting a surprisingly blistering pace in the wet was Morzalee Mohd Harris, who has been consistent with his results throughout the season and now sits in second place in the championship with a mathematical shot at usurping Mohd Noor Fairuz.

The newly-popular Class 1 of the Race Cars category was in the spotlight with the news that the Type-R Racing team was committing to an increased effort to take the fight to Akina Teo for the Championship – lead by ‘Super’ Boy Wong – as well as the return of the experienced Faizal Hassim driving for DNT Tune.

Boy Wong sped off from the green light, never to be ousted, taking the flag an impossible 18-seconds ahead of second placed Faizal Hassim, while Kesavamoorthy drove consistent race to take third. Unfortunately, Akina Teo and his team ST Wangan came unprepared for the rain, and were left paddling in the puddles having only brought a set of 17-inch Michelin slicks and had to opt for borrowed street tyres from a friend’s CR-Z sitting in the carpark.

“I’m just focusing on the Championship now, so finish fourth in these challenging conditions was the best we could hope,” exclaimed Akina after the race. Akina leads the standings and mathematically has sealed the Championship for 2012.

The Final Round takes place on the 15th December 2012. With many categories still fighting for the Championship and title of the first ever SNF Champions, expect full grids and fierce racing as the best of Malaysia’s street racers give it their best.
