SLS AMG lifts its wings and takes flight

Published on September 11th, 2009

The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG had finally stretched its gull wing doors and taken to the black-top in all its glory and boy, when it rains it really pours.

After umpteenth spy-shots and teasers, the boys from Stuttgart have finally let loose a bevy of shots of Mercedes-Benz’ latest super car offering to replace the departed but not-missed SLR McLaren (coincidence that they decided to release the shots the same day that McLaren reveals its new and independent super car?).

Unlike the MP4 however, the SLS has its engine in front of the driver and said power plant would be the 6.3-liter V8 that calls the engine bay’s of most AMG offerings its home. This unit on the other hand has been massaged to pump out 563hp and 650Nm of torque.

All those marauding horses and twisty force are channeled to the rear wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission that is a step up from the SLR McLaren’s slushbox. That being said, the slushbox was chosen for power transferring duties in the SLR because a dual-clutch transmission would have been overwhelmed by the power. Nonetheless, a dual-clutch cog-box is a step up considering the SLS makes do with less power than the SLR.

The century dash is dealt with in 3.7-seconds while maximum velocity hits a snag at the 317km/h. Stopping power comes from standard steel pieces but optional carbon ceramic discs are available should you feel the need to halt the madness in less time. Copious amounts of carbon fiber pieces help reduce gravity’s effect to maintain a better power to weight ratio.

Not much else is available about the legendary and iconic 300SL ‘Gullwing’ inspired super car yet although it should be plastered all over the web once it hits the stands at Frankfurt in under a week.

If you’ve got a ton of dosh lying around and feel the need to divert from the scissors-door crowd, we at Trafficmagonline are looking for a new BFF. Seriously though, if you want an SLS, you’re going to have to wait at least another year as production is slated to kick off only then.
