Sime Darby Motors Division, through its operating unit Hyundai-Sime Darby Motors Sdn Bhd (HSDM), and Yayasan Sime Darby (YSD) have joined hands to help Hospis Malaysia carry out its daily activities more effectively.

As part of Sime Darby’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program, they donated a Hyundai Matrix 1.6 (4-speed automatic) to Hospis Malaysia which will be used to transport doctors and nurses during their Home Care visits.

Hospis Malaysia conducts approximately 50 visits a day and more than 1,000 visits a month to homes of cancer patients, extending palliative care and medical assistance. Hospis Malaysia also provides transport to patients to and from the hospice when they are invited to its Day Care Centre.

The donation took place at the HSDM headquarters today. Dato’ Lawrence Lee, Executive Vice President of Sime Darby Motors, together with Mr Dennis Ho, Managing Director of HSDM and representatives of Yayasan Sime Darby, handed over the key to Y.Bhg. Dato’ Brig. Gen [R] Richard Robless, Council Member for HOSPIS Malaysia.

“As a responsible corporate citizen, Sime Darby believes in giving back to society. When it came to our attention that Hospis Malaysia was in need of a vehicle for their Home Care visits, we were glad to be given the opportunity to sponsor a vehicle deemed practical for such purpose,” said Dato’ Lawrence Lee.

Dato’ Brig. Gen [R] Richard Robless expressed his delight and thanked Sime Darby Motors and YSD for their donation. “It is the perfect car for us. The car is spacious and practical as it offers storage capacity which is ideal for us as we not only need space for passengers but for our medical kit as well,” he added.

Built with safety and convenience in mind, the Hyundai Matrix 1.6 comes with SRS airbags and ABS system to ensure peace of mind while driving. The Hyundai Matrix also comes with a 5-year warranty or 300,000km extended warranty, which Hospis Malaysia is entitled to as the owner of this new car. This is the longest warranty offered by any automaker in Malaysia.

With the new Hyundai Matrix 1.6, Hospis Malaysia now owns two vehicles to be used for Home Care visits.

Sime Darby’s CSR strategy is to contribute to nation building, whilst making a difference to and having a positive impact on the lives of people affected by its CSR initiatives. Sime Darby’s CSR initiatives is supported by YSD, a foundation that is wholly funded by Sime Darby Berhad to support five identified key areas, namely:

· Community development

· Education

· Youth, sports and recreation

· Arts and culture

· Conservation of the environment and protection of ecosystems

About Hospis Malaysia

Hospis Malaysia is a charitable organisation that offers professional Palliative Care to patients who are suffering from life-limiting illnesses, which may be anything from cancer, AIDS, organ failures, neurological disorders etc., and who live within Klang Valley. Care extended by Hospis Malaysia transcends age, gender, culture, religion and social standing and is offered free-of-charge.

Not affiliated with any political, religious, governmental or private groups, Hospis Malaysia depends greatly on public and corporate support as its source of funds. Besides donations received, the numerous fundraising events organised by Hospis Malaysia ensure a steady stream of fund inflow to enable continuous and effective running of the hospice.

From a hospice with 44 patients under its care 18 years ago, Hospis Malaysia, now receives a yearly referral of approximately 1500 patients each year. The increase in referrals subsequently brings about the increase in operating expenses, which amounts to approximately RM 1.8 million each year and which goes towards the cost of medicine and medical equipment, training & education cost, staff remuneration and general administration cost. Funds received are managed by a team of council members who act, on a voluntary basis, as trustees of Hospis Malaysia’s funds.
