Sime Darby Group, through Yayasan Sime Darby (YSD), Hyundai-Sime Darby Motors Sdn Bhd (HSDM) and the Kuala Lumpur Golf & Country Club (KLGCC), will be one of the main sponsors of the prestigious Maybank Malaysian Open 2010 (MMO 2010).

Co-sanctioned by the Asian Tour and European Tour. MMO 2010 will be held from 4-7 March 2010 at KLGCC. It will feature some of the top golfers including K.J Choi, Darren Clarke, Chris Wood, Thongchai Jaidee and Shingo Katayama. Defending Champion Anthony Kang will also make a return to the tournament.

YSD is one of the main sponsors of the tournament, while HSDM is the official car sponsor. KLGCC is the venue host of the 49th edition of the tournament, which has attracted a strong field of 156 players from around the world.

As one of the main sponsors, YSD will benefit from the worldwide exposure through the live telecast of the event. Set up in July 2008, YSD is a foundation that promotes sports excellence and development in the country through its Youth, Sports and Recreation pillar.

“YSD, in line with Sime Darby’s Corporate Social Responsibility initiative, will always support sporting events that benefit the country and society. It will make available the resources to promote and raise the quality of sports in Malaysia,” said YSD Chairman, Tun Musa Hitam, who is also the Chairman of Sime Darby.

Besides golf, YSD is also involved in the development of lawn bowls and cricket in the country. Recently, it has taken the lead to help Malaysia win its first gold medal at the 2012 London Olympics when it sponsored seven cyclists from the Malaysian National Cycling Federation (MNCF) to compete in international tournaments leading to the 2012 London Olympics.

This sponsorship, which includes world-class riders such as Mohd Azizulhasni Awang and Josiah Ng, is expected to further propel the Malaysian cycling team in the global cycling scene.

HSDM, as the official car sponsor of the event, is giving out four new Tucsons as the “Hole-in-One” prize for the duration of the tournament. Apart from the prizes, HSDM will also be providing 12 new Sonatas which will be used to ferry star players to the event venue.

Patrons attending the event will also be experiencing the luxurious comfort of the chauffeur-driven Grand “Starex”, Hyundai’s large MPV. Six units of Hyundai’s Grand “Starex” will be used as the transport vehicle ferrying patrons from the car park to the event location. In the event of bad weather conditions, the Grand “Starex” will also be used as the evacuation vehicle.

“We are delighted and proud to be a sponsor of this prestigious and international tournament,” said Dennis Ho, Managing Director of Hyundai-Sime Darby Motors Sdn Bhd. “We look forward to this event as it provides us an opportunity to showcase Hyundai’s car technology,” he added.

The prestigious golf tournament in the country will be held at KLGCC’s West Course, which has been rated as the fifth best golf course in the world by Eddie Adams, the green keeping consultant to the European Tour.

The newly refurbished and renovated West Course has resulted in a re-modeled and longer course and is expected to provide an entertaining and challenging play to the players.

Since its opening in March 2009, the West Course has received numerous awards including the Best Course Renovation in Asia-Pacific by Asian Golf Monthly and the top golf course in the country by Tee Times and Expatriate Lifestyle magazine.

In conjunction with the MMO 2010, the Sime Darby Group (via the KLGCC) has also launched a special programme called “In Search of a Malaysian Champion” prior to the tournament.

Aimed at developing a home grown champion for the MMO 2010, the programme has six Malaysian professional golfers who underwent a comprehensive 4-week training under Andrew Nicholson, the Senior Director of Instruction for IMG, the world’s premier and most diversified sports, entertainment and media company.

Among the six players were Danny Chia, S.Siva Chandran, Shaaban Hussin and Airil Rizman who underwent mental and physical conditioning such as tournament preparation and play, course management, biomechanics, short game and video analysis.
