SIC launches Commemorative Book on 20 years of Malaysian GP

Published on October 1st, 2010

“Definitely a must for any MotoGP fan,” that’s was how the Chief Executive Officer of Sepang International Circuit, Ahmad Razlan Ahmad Razali summed up after flipping through the pages of the 20 Years of Malaysian Motorcycle Grand Prix commemorative book.

“Fantastic images and loaded with information… a true collectors’ item,” said Razlan, a self-confessed MotoGP fanatic and the man behind the production of the 160-page hard cover Amazing Malaysia – 20 Years of Malaysian Grand Prix.

Produced in conjunction with the upcoming 20th edition of the Malaysian Motorcycle Grand Prix and as limited copies, the book is currently on sale at RM260 per copy at the circuit. Fans can also purchase them through internet via www.sepangcircuit.com.my.

The one and only publication on the history of Malaysian Motorcycle Grand Prix, the book is produced by SIC, which commissioned a team of MotoGP experts in coming out with the book. While the text were being provided by a highly renowned motorsports writer Julian Ryder, images were supplied by David Goldman of Gold and Goose and designed by moto.com.

The book traces back the key moments of the Malaysian GP; taking the readers on a pictorial journey from the first Malaysian GP at Batu Tiga Circuit in Shah Alam to the last race in Sepang that saw Valentino Rossi celebrating his ninth world crown with his brigade of fans with a live chicken.

It also provided a preview of the 2010 season and a special section on Malaysian riders that included the local wildcard entries with the likes of the late Tong Veng Kit, Kuan Meng Heng, Shahrun Nizam Mohd Tamin, M. Meganathan and last year’s dynamic duo of Elly Idzlianizar Ilias and Muhammad Zulfahmi Khairuddin.

Explaining on the rationale in producing the book, Razlan said, “It is only natural after 20 years of MotoGP in Malaysia for SIC to reflect those years and to look forward for the future.”

“We need to educate the masses, the sponsors and especially the fans of these wonderful memories. We need to document the atmosphere, the excitement of Batu Tiga, the one off race in Pasir Gudang and all the world class riders that came to our shores and became multi champions, this is a book that we can be proud of,” he said.

He added that it was an honour for him to be part of the commemorative book; stressing that the Malaysian GP is the longest international event ever held in Malaysia and that it is the pinnacle of motorsport on two wheels.

“I believe it will go down in Malaysian history in motorsports as The Event that is close to the ordinary people out there. It can relate to the masses, the guy on the “kapchai” and I am proud to be with the team that collates, coordinate and being involved in the compilation of the book.”

“I still cannot believe it is already 20 years! I hope it will stay in Malaysia for many more years. What makes it more memorable this year is the unprecedented participation of two Malaysians in two out of three classes of the MotoGP – which are the 125cc and Moto2.”

“I hope to see one day to have Malaysians on all three of the categories. I sincerely feel this is a real significant especially during my tenure as the Chief Executive of SIC,” said Razlan, whom prior to his appointment at SIC was the team owner of Pineapple Motorsports.
