Sepang International Circuit (SIC), promoter and organizer of the Malaysian Motorcycle Grand Prix, took opportunity of today’s MotoGP pre-season test at Sepang to kick off its first CSR programme of the year in raising money for the flood relief fund.

“Today marked the first day of the second MotoGP winter test and the first day of our charity drive ‘RM2 or More’ where fans, visitors, contractors and even staff of SIC are encourage to donate at least RM2 to the fund. It will run for the three days throughout this testing,” says SIC Chief Executive Officer, Dato Ahmad Razlan Ahmad Razali.

He said all the MotoGP riders and team members had also committed themselves to the charity programme and would be presenting their donations in a simple ceremony at the circuit tomorrow at 9.30am before they start their session.

“We have not actually set any firm target and we aim to collect as much as we can,” he said, adding that SIC hoped to get some RM10,000 for the fund.

“We had a good turnout at the first test early this month and that gave us the idea of having this charity drive. Hopefully, we can do this every year. We are very fortunate to be here to enjoy this world class event; so, it’s only rationale for us to help the less fortunate … in this case, the flood victims in Johor,” he said.

For 2011, MotoGP teams and riders are allowed three sessions of test with Sepang organizing two of the sessions. The third session would be held in March at Losail Circuit in Qatar ahead of the season-opener Grand Prix of Qatar on March 20.

On track, the MotoGP riders started their first day of testing under clear skies and bright sunshine with Marco Simoncelli’s time of 2 minutes 0.757 seconds to beat. It was recorded on the final day of the first test on February 3.
