The final leg of the SHELL HELIX INVASION TOUR continues with more than 70 supercars of various makes made their way to Penang last weekend. As usual, the started early as drivers gathered at PROTON Centre Of Excellence (COE) for breakfast and briefing. All the cars were stickered-up the day before at The Equatorial Hotel.
As the drivers arrived, the organizers distribute the walkies to ensure a smooth drive. Right after breakfast, the drivers went for briefing. Problems struck earlier this time as Zafran’s Vantage suffered a loss of power while David’s Challenge Stradale had two punctures, right front tyre and left rear tyre.
The rest of the drivers went ahead and left COE right on the dot at 11.00am. As for Zafran, he went to his workshop in Sunway, while David, Satwant and the support crew wait for the tyres to arrive. By 3.30pm, David and the support crew left COE and head towards Penang. As for the rest of the drivers, they arrived at Tapah Rest Area to refuel and catch their breath since it was a fast drive. Since it was a big convoy, it was divided into three groups with the first group comprised of fast drivers.
First group was headed by Dato’ Azizi with Sharon Lim as the sweeper. Second group was headed by Erwin Azizi with Ray Hong as the sweeper while the third and fourth group comprised by the Lotus and media.
Despite practicing safety procedure, a Lotus doggy-styled Azhar’s Porsche GT3 as the driver didn’t get to brake in time due to traffic. Luckily that was the only incident during the SHELL HELIX Invasion Tour: Penang. It was a smooth drive apart from the mishap but traffic was bumper to bumper from Ipoh to Bukit Merah.
By 2.20pm, the drivers arrived at PIFWA, Nibong Tebal… but not before being at the wrong place. Once arrived, they went into a nearby hall only to realize that it was not the venue. Ten minutes later, they managed to be at the right place, drivers then head on to plant mangrove trees in order to support PIFWA’s effort to preserve the marine wetlands for the future generation.
Mangrove planting after a hard drive proved to be tiring hence the grumble of stomachs brought the drivers to Pizza Hut Auto City to quench their thirst and annihilate the hunger within. Just imagine getting lunch only by 4pm.
From there, the drivers went to the The Shangri-La’s Rasa Sayang Resort & Spa, where they will be getting their much-needed rest. The drivers arrived at the hotel by 6pm, just enough time to freshen up before having a sumptuous dinner. There were a number of casualties though. Zaid lost the AC in his Lambo making it the hottest Lambo in Malaysia while Awe’s Ferrari suffered a faulty belting hence it had to be flat-decked back to Kuala Lumpur the very next day.
Problems aside, the drivers head to Sixty9ine Mansion which was jammed pack with supercars, the drivers and party-goers as they went all crazy and party the night away. It was all about having fun from 10pm to the wee morning of the night.
Late night at Mansion meant a late check-out… and so the drivers head for lunch at Restoran Pelita, Juru for some local delicacies. After a fulfilling lunch, the group head back to Kuala Lumpur and concluded the SHELL HELIX INVASION TOUR 2011.
