Seven new drivers to put pressure on championship leaders

It will be another spectacular outing for the Asian Touring Car Series this weekend, held during the Malaysian Super Series. The ATCS is heading into its second weekend of the season with Rounds 3 & 4 to be held at the 5.4km Malaysian Formula 1 circuit, Sepang International Circuit.

Seven new drivers will be joining the Series from this round onwards to pose a challenge to the current Championship leaders. These drivers are regulars in the touring car scene in Macau but will be joining the Asian Touring Car Series for the first time.

“It will be an exciting weekend for sure. Not only will we see the battle between teammates with Lui Man Kit and Mak Ka Lok of RPM Racing Team trying to edge out Cheung Chi Sing and Man Ting Yu from Team IMSP and also the duo from G.Harry Racing, Charles Ng and Harry Chai, we will also have seven more drivers added to the series,” said David Sonenscher, CEO of Motorsport Asia.

Cheung and Man have a lot at stake, with Cheung trying to retain his Championship title and Man vying for that elusive championship win after being in the series for four years.

The 2009 Championship winner currently lies third in the points table, after finishing fourth in both races in May. The Hong Kong driver is part of the four man Team IMSP, along with 2009 Championship runner up Man Ting Yu, veteran race driver Danny Stacy Chau and Liu Lic Ka, who will be competing the weekend with the BMW 320 SI E90.

Currently Lui Man Kit of RPM Racing Team heads the points table and looks set to return to Malaysia to further cement his lead in the Asian Touring Car Series. He is currently heading the points table with 27 points from the two podiums he collected during the last meet.

Lui claimed the first pole position of the season and ended the weekend collecting one second place and one win for his team propelling RPM Racing Team to the top of the Team’s points table.

Five points behind him on the leaderboard is his RPM Racing Team teammate Mak Ka Lok also of Macau. Mak collected the points from two spectacular drives during the last outing, claiming two podiums in his Honda Integra DC5. Towards the end of the second race, Mak faced some transmission problems while in second place, leaving Harry Chai an opportunity to overtake him in the last minutes of the race.

Charles Ng looks ready to make up for the DNF he suffered in Round 2 after a spectacular season opening win. This is the first full season in the Asian Touring Car Series for the young driver and he has signed on with G.Harry Racing Team, driving alongside team owner, Harry Chai. Ng currently lies fourth in the points table after collecting 15 points from his first win.

These drivers will be joined by a slew of new entrants who were unable to participate in the first weekend. Seven new drivers will be joining the lineup. There are three privateer drivers and they are Ben Law, Chan Wing Shiu and Danny Chau Kwok Sang, not to be confused with Danny Stacy Chau of Team IMSP, each in the Honda Integra DC5.

The remaining drivers are from RPM Racing Team and they are Chan Ken Meng, Dicky Cheung, Lui Man Fai and Kuok Io Keong. Chan will bring with him the Toyota Altezza while the rest are in Hondas. These drivers are all experienced and this weekend will prove to be an interesting competition between the ‘new’ entries and the series regulars.

The Asian Touring Car Series continues with Round 3 & 4 Qualifying held on Saturday 26 June 2010 at 5pm (Malaysian time), while the two 10-lap races will be held on Sunday 27 June with Round 3 at 11.15am and Round 4 at 2.25pm.
