Sepang gets stamp’d by Ferrari Challenge Asia Pacific!

Published on October 4th, 2011

Though it was in actual fact the 4th Round of the Ferrari Challenge Asia Pacific, one couldn’t hide the infatuation to see a pit full of (yes, breath in) Ferraris. Sitting there, peacefully and calmly, waiting for their turns to pounce onto the track to show us what them horses can do. It’s been two days after the race now, but I can still hear them buzzing in the ear.

This late report is not for any other reason, but for one only our natural habitat known as Malaysia can cook up. The Ferrari officials said “where the extremely humid conditions combine to add even greater challenges”. Indeed it was. And the light rain that hit during qualifying definitely didn’t help the guy who was shooting track side. Yes, he fell ill.

However having the chance to witness twenty Ferrari 458 Challenge cars galloping around the track was definitely a sight for sore eyes, and did we mention about the only one Malaysian entry by the name of Erwin Azizi of Naza Racing Team?

More medicines for sore eyes….

In the 25 minutes first race, a tight battle ensued after the lights went out for the rolling start as pole sitter Kim Tack Sung of South Korea leads the pack of angry horses down the main straights of Sepang.

However in a quick succession of fate, he was overtaken by Japanese drivers Hisao Shigeta and Hisamori Hayashi. Close racing followed from there on and with no mishaps, the race finished as Hisao Shigeta crossed the line ahead of compatriot Hisamori Hayashi, followed by Ringo Chong of Singapore that made up the podium for the Trofeo Pirelli.

Meanwhile in Coppa Shell, Indonesian Renaldi Martin Hutasoit clinched his victory, with the Australian Steve Wyatt and Gregory Teo of Singapore finishing second and third respectively.

Renaldi Martin Hutasoit once again took the top step of the podium for race 2 in the Coppa Shell, with Kim Tack Sung and Malaysian Erwin Azizi who fought up from 8th in class to clinch the 2nd runner-up, ending what had been an exciting weekend so far.

The APAC series will now progress to the Ferrari World Finals, taking place at Mugello International Circuit over the weekend of 6 November.
