Rounds 3 & 4 – Qualifying: Liu takes pole in his new BMW

Published on June 26th, 2010

The change to a BMW 320 SI E90 was a good move for Macau driver Liu Lic Ka when he claimed the pole position for Round 3 of the Asian Touring Car Series.

Most of the drivers were on strategy to maintain their tyres for the race and with the scorching weather those that are familiar with the circuit did the minimum laps possible while the new participants took the opportunity to get used to the circuit.

Liu, driving with the four man Team IMSP did a fantastic job with his new car and clocked 2:27.496 on his third lap. “I am happy with the Qualifying today and I will definitely try my best for the race tomorrow” said Liu.

He still maintains his number 3 and lime green livery on his car and is looking forward to the season with an end goal of participating in the Macau GP in November. “I bought this car so that I can race it in Macau this year”. When asked how much the change cost him, he cited with a laugh “Many many money”.

Lining up next to Liu is Hong Kong driver Charles Ng in the G.Harry Racing Honda Integra DC5. This is the first time that Ng is competing in the full season and he looks excited at being able to compete against some great Asian touring car drivers.

“I definitely feel great with the second place. We had a mechanical issue and the team tried till the last moment to put the car back together and we made it on time.

“The BMW is a fast car and the driver is a great driver. Second place next to the BMW is an honour but I think we will do great tomorrow” said Ng after the session.

Despite some earlier gearbox issues, experienced touring car driver, Mak Ka Lok claimed the third spot.

“I tried to keep my tyres and gear in good condition for tomorrow’s race. We had to rebuild my gearbox so this session was somewhat of a test for us. I did a few laps and I stopped pushing just to maintain my tyres.

“The first three cars are close so we will have to see the laptimes and the opportunities to claim the win” ended Mak.

Lining up in fourth next to him will be Hong Kong driver Danny Stacy Chau of Team IMSP and behind them will be current Championship leader Lui Man Kit and his younger brother and first time ATCS participant, Lui Man Fai.

2009 ATCS Champion, Cheung Chi Sing was struggling with mechanical issues will start last in tomorrow’s race.

The Asian Touring Car Series Rounds 3 & 4 will be held during the Malaysian Super Series at Sepang International Circuit on Sunday 27 June 2010. Round 3 is scheduled for 11.15am local time while Round 4 will be at 2.25pm.
