Proton looking for podium finish for rally

Published on July 1st, 2010

Proton R3 Malaysia Rally team will be rallying on familiar ground this weekend as the Asia Pacific Rally Championship (APRC) Round 3 will be held in New Zealand. As both drivers have driven the stages (International Rally of Whangarei) before. The drivers, Alistair McRae and co-driver Bill Hayes with Chris Atkinson and co-driver Stephane Prevot, will be chasing their maiden win in the Proton Satria New S2000.

They will be covering 280km of competitive special stages which will span over two days. The heavily cambered, fast and flowing gravel roads of Whangarei and Kaipara districts should be familiar enough for the drivers to take it head on.

Atkinson is currently located at sixth position in the APRC, and McRae is five points less on seventh position for the Driver’s Championship. Proton is third in the Manufacturers Championship with 22 points behind Mitsubishi and Subaru.

“It’s been an extremely challenging start for the team after two rounds but we’re hoping to put an end to all the misfortunes this weekend. With further developments made to the car over the last one month, and given the fact that both rivers will be competing on familiar terrain, we’re setting our sights on a podium finish,” said team Manager Datuk Abdul Razak Dawood.

“This is all part and parcel of rallying but more importantly, the Satria Neo S2000 has proven that it is competitive and a worthy adversary to the more established manufacturers, plus very much in the position to come away with a win. It’s now a question of having all the elements in place. Equally important is the fact that the car has generated plenty of interest overseas and this augurs well for Proton in our quest to establish greater awareness and acceptance for both the brand and its products abroad,” finished Abdul Razak.
