Sepang International Circuit was the host to some of the leading marques in Motorsports last weekend in conjunction with the Asian Festival of Speed that heated up Malaysia’s signature battleground for all things speed. Leading the weekend with exhilaration and excitement was the infamous Porsche Carrera Cup Asia series that circuits around signature tracks within Asia to pit some of the best drivers in the industry against one another.

With this year’s latest instalment of Stuttgart’s latest GT3 series racer, the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup in 991 format – it has shifted the race series into an even faster composition, raising the ante of competition closer than ever before, not only for the drivers, but also the teams involved.

The Porsche Carrera Cup Asia series began on Saturday with a rather wet qualifying round that made it difficult for the drivers to maximise their potential. Fortunately – after the qualifying rounds, Sepang was blessed with sunny skies which dried up the tarmac very quickly to make for an interesting race.

Round 8 – The 10 lap race on Saturday was lead by the reigning Porsche Carrera Cup Asia champion, LKM Racing’s Earl Bamber, who increased his lead at the top of the 2014 points table by taking victory in the Round 8 race in Sepang. Second across the line was Team Jebsen’s Rodolfo Avila with Budweiser Team Absolute Racing’s Tung Ho-Pin of China taking the final podium spot.

In Class B it was points leader Alif Hamdan of Malaysia who took the win, the Nexus Racing star recovering from a tough qualifying which had seen him start from 11th on the grid. Second was series newcomer Max Twigg of Clearwater Racing, a superb debut for the Australian in just his second time in a Porsche 911 GT3 Cup car. Title contender, OpenRoad Racing’s Francis Tjia, was third in the category, delighted to have converted what he had expected to be an exercise in damage limitation after qualifying down in 20th overall, into a podium finish.

Sunday Round 9

Round 9 – The epic battle for the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia overall and Class B championships continued on Sunday, with Round 9 that shaped up to be another sizzling 10-lap race on Malaysia’s thrillingly fast and flowing Formula 1 track.

IMG_3314

Team Porsche Holding’s Martin Ragginger put in an astonishing display of perfection on the limit today to take a pole to flag victory in Round 9 of the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia at Sepang. The Austrian withstood everything Earl Bamber of LKM Racing had to throw at him, keeping the reigning champion at bay for seven of the 10-lap race to take his second win of the season, taking his second podium of the weekend and third in succession was Team Jebsen’s Rodolfo Avila.

IMG_3321

In Class B – Alif Hamdan secured his sixth Class B victory, strengthening his position at the top of the category leaderboard. Taking second position at the finish line was Clearwater Racing’s Max Twigg of Australia, the Australian continuing his convincing series debut, with Tan taking third, consolation of sorts for his bad luck in Round 8 after a brilliant performance in Qualifying.

The Porsche Carrera Cup Asia now looks ahead to a highlight of its calendar at the Singapore F1 Grand Prix next month. The Marina Bay street circuit, with its unforgiving barriers and walls, beckons for the talented field, where they will do battle in the very heart of the glitz and glamour of the Lion City from September 19-21.
