The Peugeot 308 Turbo was named Overall Car of the Year at the New Straits Times/Maybank Car of the Year 2009 awards ceremony that was held in Subang Dec 14.

The prestigious award marks the first time the Naza Group has won an overall car of the year award. It is also the first time the Peugeot brand has been honoured such an award in Malaysia.

“We have never doubted the Peugeot 308’s potential. It is an attainable European premium offering. There isn’t anything else in its segment that offers the same combination of power, dynamics, safety, premium quality and fuel efficiency that the Peugeot 308 Turbo does,” said SM Nasarudin SM Nasimuddin, Joint Executive Chairman of the Naza Group.

Besides being named overall car of the year, the Peugeot 308 Turbo also won the top prize in the family car category. The judges of the awards said the Peugeot 308 Turbo was picked over its competitors due to its fuel efficiency, performance of its award-winning 1.6-litre direct-injection turbo engine as well as its full-length panoramic glass roof.

Furthermore, they said the locally-assembled Peugeot 308 Turbo won because of its competitive price positioning and build quality.

The Peugeot 308 Turbo’s double win at the NST/Maybank Car of the Year awards follows five other awards that have been bestowed to the Peugeot 308 line-up this year.

The Peugeot 308 Turbo has also been named Car of the Year by Wheels Weekly while the Peugeot 308 VTi has picked up the top awards in the mid-size sedan/hatchback category at the AUTOCAR Asean Car of the Year 2009 awards and in the best local assembly compact car category at the Asian Auto-VCA Car of the Year 2009 awards.

Additionally, the Peugeot 308 was picked as one of the Get A Car and CIMB Preferred Best Cars of 2009 while the Peugeot 308 GT won the first place in the performance car category in the Asian Auto – Mudah.my Fuel Efficiency Awards 2009.

SM Nasarudin said the success of the Peugeot 308 line-up this year was owed to Nasim Sdn Bhd’s efforts in growing the French marquee in the Malaysian market. Nasim, a unit of the Naza Group, is the official distributor of the Peugeot brand in Malaysia.

“When we took-over the Peugeot franchise on Jan 2, 2008, we promised to make the Peugeot brand a success story in Malaysia. And in just under 24 months from that date, we are on track to delivering on our promise and this overall car of the year award is a sign of things to come from us,” SM Nasarudin said.

For the Peugeot 308 Turbo, Nasim has sold 541 units as at end-November. The Peugeot 308 Turbo was launched alongside the Peugeot 308 VTi in late January this year while the Peugeot 308 GT was launched in September 2008. In total, Nasim has so far sold 822 units of all three variants this year.

Including the 206 Bestari, 407 sedan and 207CC, Peugeot sales in the first 11-months of 2009 jumped some 450% as at end-November to 3,618 units compared to 654 units in the corresponding period in 2008.

The Peugeot 308 Turbo features a 1.6-litre turbocharged engine that was jointly developed by PSA Peugeot-Citroen and BMW AG and produces 140hp of power and 240 Newton metres of torque.

Among the safety features in the five-star EURO NCAP rated car includes six airbags, ABS, ESP, Electronic Brake Force Distribution, Brake Assist and Dynamic Traction Control. Priced at RM113,888, the Peugeot 308 Turbo has a combined fuel consumption of 7.9-litres per 100 km.
