In preparation for the 2010 Formula BMW Pacific series, the PETRONAS MOFAZ Racing team’s four young drivers resumed their Formula BMW tests at the Sepang Circuit on Monday 1st March 2010.

The quartet took the opportunity to reacquaint themselves with formula cars following two intense months of familiarisation training with skid cars. With the exception of Calvin Wong who had graduated from the PETRONAS Formula Xperience (PFX) programme in 2008 and is returning for his second year in the Formula BMW Pacific series; 2009 PFX graduates Natasha Seatter, Ryan Ritchie and Abang Amirrul Hadi Abang Khiruddin will be making their debut as rookies in the 2010 series.

Kicking off the session at 8.30am, the test began with all four drivers going out on four-lap cycles in an effort to determine the best setup for each individual driver.

Brian Ireland, Chief Engineer PETRONAS MOFAZ Racing:

“Calvin made good progress throughout the whole day although running on old tyres, securing a fastest lap time of 2’ 13.00” on top of all other Formula BMW teams testing today. Natasha, Amirrul and Ryan were able to bring their lap times considerably down to the 2’16” mark after several key adjustments were done to their cars after receiving the drivers’ feedback.

This also gave the engineers a concise idea of how the cars needed to be setup to suit the individual driving styles, and where improvement was required to help the drivers to gain better understanding of the cars. For the next two days, we will look into improving times with new tyres and technical adjustments suited to the drivers”.

The test session was also used to assess the drivers’ individual capabilities as well as to gauge their technical and physical abilities. On hand to observe the drivers’ technical capabilities throughout the test session was experienced driver-coach Paul Spooner. Also present at the test was the team’s physical trainer Nick Kitchen who used his vast experience in Formula One to develop individual physical training programmes for the drivers.

The team’s testing will commence for the next two days as well, followed by two more test sessions in the following week to prepare for the first race of the 2010 Formula BMW Pacific series, which will take place 1st – 4th of April 2010 at Sepang International Circuit.
