PETRONAS MOFAZ RACING bags first podium

Published on May 25th, 2010

The PETRONAS MOFAZ Racing Team celebrated its first podium finish of the season at Rounds 3 – 6 of the 2010 Formula BMW Pacific Series last weekend. After securing a hard-fought fourth place at round 3 on Saturday, Calvin Wong followed this up with a spirited drive at Sunday’s round 5 that earned the 17-year old a third place finish, his and the team’s maiden podium finish.

Taking place as part of the Asian Festival of Speed (AFOS), the rounds at the Sepang Circuit kicked off on Saturday with practice and qualifying in the morning. Clocking in with consistent lap times in both sessions, Calvin’s time of 2:11.966m saw him qualify in 8th grid position for the third and fifth races. His second fastest lap time at 2:12.082m was good to place him on the third grid row in P6 for the fourth and sixth races.

Race 3 (Saturday): A good start in the first race of the weekend saw Calvin make up considerable ground to be within the top 5 positions in the initial stages of the race. A series of quick laps saw Calvin close the gap to the leading cars before claiming a strong fourth place finish at the flag. Despite being involved in racing incidents, rookie teammate Natasha Seatter was still able to finish the race in 12th. A separate incident early in the race led to the retirement of Ryan Ritchie while an engine problem prior to the race forced Amirrul Khiruddin to sit it out, as mechanics worked to fix the problem.

Race 4 (Saturday): For the second race, all four drivers were involved in separate racing incidents that compromised their races. An accident at the start virtually ended Natasha’s run, while another incident forced Ryan to battle through the back of the field before finishing 17th. Teammates Calvin and Amirrul finished 19th and 20th, respectively.

Race 5 (Sunday): Bouncing back from the setback at the previous race, Calvin produced a strong race to finish third and take his first ever Formula BMW Pacific podium result. Rookie teammates Ryan Ritchie, Amirrul Khiruddin and Natasha all finished in 16th, 19th and 20th, respectively.

Race 6 (Sunday): The action-filled final race of the weekend saw Calvin engaged in several battles for positions right from the start. Despite suffering a broken rear as a result of a shunt with another competitor in the early stages of the 10-lap race, Calvin was still able to finish in 16th. Teammates Ryan finished 14th while Amirrul capped off his weekend in 20th. Meanwhile, a penalty incurred from the previous race meant Natasha had to sit out the round.

Selected driver comments:

Calvin Wong (MAS): “This being my second season in the championship, I know I had to raise my game. Overall, I am happy with the results that I was able to produce. For sure I am delighted to have achieved my very first podium finish but I know I can do better. It was also quite challenging with all the guest drivers and the other competitors. I know I have to work hard and not give up so that I can keep pushing for the races to come”.

Matthjis Hoitink, Team Manager: “Overall, it was a very fruitful race weekend for the PETRONAS MOFAZ Racing team. Despite the challenges we faced this weekend, the crew did a great job to overcome the hurdles. The drivers also showed great fighting spirit throughout the 4 races, never giving up although mentally and physically. It has certainly been a steep learning curve for the team but this has helped us to prepare for the coming rounds.”

The next round of the 2010 Formula BMW Pacific Series is scheduled to take place as a support event for the inaugurual Korean F1™ Grand Prix at the Yeongam Circuit in South Korea from 26 to 29 August 2010.
