UMW Toyota Motor Sdn Bhd, assembler and distributor of Toyota vehicles and Toyota Genuine Parts, today announces the introduction of the NEW TOYOTA FORTUNER, its full-sized SUV 4×4 offering for the Malaysian market. With a product concept of “Advanced & Prestige‟, the latest Fortuner has received upgrades in exterior cosmetics, additional features make it greater value for money and of course improvements inspired by customer feedback.

The new Toyota Fortuner launched today is available in two engine variants – 2.7-litre petrol engine and 2.5-litre turbodiesel engine – in four grades. A 4-speed automatic transmission (ECT) is standard for all variants.

A new colour – Dark Steel Mica – is now included in the choices of body colours which include Silver Metallic, Medium Silver Metallic and Solid White. The previously available Coal Black is no longer available.

The prices for the new Fortuner range are as follow:

Fortuner 2.7V (P) A/T TRD Sportivo : RM182,488

Fortuner 2.7V (P) A/T : RM178,990

Fortuner 2.5G (D) A/T TRD Sportivo : RM171,448

Fortuner 2.5G (D) A/T : RM167,990

(Above prices are for private registration, metallic colour, Peninsular Malaysia)

The new Fortuner has been given a fresh new look that enhances its appearance which now has a more high-class image. The new reverse-trapezoid chrome grille presents an advanced style and, together with the newly-styled headlamps with protruding outer lens shape, emphasizes the width of the vehicle.

Viewed from the side, the new Fortuner looks like it has more forward movement due to subtle changes in the character lines on the overfenders around the wheel arches. The progressive design continues to the rear with the classy wrap around glass styling that is usually found on more expensive models.

Other new features include revised body-coloured wing mirrors with embedded signal lights and restyled rear combination lighting units with new graphics giving more clear cut impression and advanced look.

TRD Sportivo version consists of both front and rear bumper spoiler and TRD Sportivo stripes that are specially designed and approved by Toyota. TRD – which stands for Toyota Racing Development, is a unit in the Toyota Group involved in motorsports and high-performance products so the TRD Sportivo aerokit give a sportier look to the Fortuner. The front and rear bumpers spoilers are made of PP (poly-propylene) which is a strong and hard plastic material.

As with the exterior styling, the interior of the Fortuner also has modern design concept which uses the theme of “Advanced & Prestige‟. In response to customer preferences, the colour scheme is now a darker colour.

The central area of the dashboard has been restyled with a horizontally-based design to give a wider feel to the cabin. For the Fortuner 2.7V grade, black woodgrain/chrome plating are use for the trim to produce a high quality image feel while the Fortuner 2.5G has silver finishing to accentuate an advance image.

The instrument panel‟s sporty 3-meter design has also undergone some changes and no longer has cylindrical walls separating each meter. Set deeply to prevent reflections, there is excellent legibility as they are Optitron meters, with brighter displays for more clarity in daylight conditions. At night, turquoise blue illumination lights the meters for fatigue-free viewing.

New features include the redesigned steering wheel which has a 4-spoke design that would look at home in a prestigious sedan. The Fortuner 2.7V has audio controls on the upper left spoke with classy black woodgrain trim for the upper quadrant of the rim. The shift lever knob on the Fortuner 2.7V also gets a black woodgrain finish to match the dashboard, steering wheel and door trim as well as leather trim for the three rows of seats. For the Fortuner 2.5G, a gear position indicator is now added to the meter to keep the driver informed.

Being a SUV which will be used for active lifestyles, the Fortuner has flexible seating arrangements which allow for more people or more/larger cargo to be carried. Should maximum seating capacity be needed, all three rows are available and can accommodate up to seven adults comfortably. The third row of seats can be folded against the sides to create a large cargo area and should longer items have to be carried, one or both of the second row can be flipped forward, increasing the length of the cargo floor. Additionally, for comfort, the second row of seats have fore/aft adjustment.

Lots of storage space is available around the cabin and each row has cupholders or bottle holders. For small items which need to be kept out of sight when the vehicle is parked, there is a glovebox and centre console box while overhead is a sunglass holder (restyled to be flush against the ceiling).

Two types of air-conditioning systems are installed in the Fortuner, depending on the variant, and both systems include a separate blower on the ceiling to bring more cool air to the rear occupants. There is also a separate control for the rear blower to adjust the fan speed and it can be switched off when not required. The 2.7V air-conditioning system has automatic climate control while the 2.5G has a manual system. The control dials on the 2.5G have been revised for easier operation.

The 6-speaker audio system with a 2-DIN head unit has been upgraded with additional features. Besides an AM/FM radio receiver, CD-player and MP3 capability, it can now also interface with portable music players (including iPod compatibility) via an AUX-Jack or USB port. Radio reception is via a printed glass antenna.

Fortuner 2.7V steering wheel comes with audio and MID switch to ease the driver in selecting the preferred information while driving.

A Multi-Information Display at the top of the centre console area of the dashboard provides the driver with journey information. Besides showing the time, this tripcomputer provides the driver with seven different types of information which can be selected at the touch of a button.

For added comfort and convenience, the Fortuner 2.7V has a 6-way power driver‟s seat. All adjustments can be done effortlessly by operating switches on the lower side of the seat.

Other standard comfort/convenience features include power windows and power door locks, the former having jam protection to avoid causing injury to an occupant‟s hand which may be caught by the rising glass. The driver‟s door window also has a one-touch up/down operation for extra convenience.

The Fortuner comes with two proven and robust engine choices with the following features:-

The 2.7-litre engine

This petrol engine was specially developed for applications in SUVs and MPVs. Extensive efforts were made to reduce internal friction and the number of components, saving weight as well as reducing noise and vibrations.

As a further measure for smoother performance, the engine incorporates balance shafts as well.

Toyota‟s VVT-i (Variable Valve Timing with intelligence) technology boosts power output, enhances fuel efficiency as well as reduces pollutants in the exhaust gases. The engine develops a 118 kW (160 PS) of power at 5,200 rpm with 241 Nm of torque generated at 3,800 rpm. This high torque level ensures that the Fortuner has strong pulling power for quick overtaking as well as when carrying heavy loads.

The Fortuner 2.7V has a 4-speed automatic transmission (ECT) with electronic management for more efficient operation. With electronic management, shifting is coordinated with the engine precisely, thereby enabling transitions between gears to be smoother.

The 2.5-litre diesel engine

The Fortuner 2.5G is also powered by the reliable Toyota D-4D turbodiesel engine with Common Rail Direct Injection technology. This technology improves the performance of the diesel engine as well as enhances drivability, comfort and fuel economy.

From its displacement of 2.5 litres comes a maximum output of 75 kW (102 PS) at 3,600 rpm with substantial torque of 260 Nm available between 1,600 rpm and 2,400 rpm. Like the Fortuner 2.7V, the transmission is 4-speed automatic transmission (ECT) type with a gated slot for a sporty feel and high class image.

The Fortuner has a full-time 4×4 drivetrain for maximum capability on all surfaces, from smoothhighway to off-road tracks. With full-time 4×4, all four wheels constantly get power to give better stability and grip in all conditions.

For smooth delivery of torque between the front and rear axles at all times, the drivetrain employs a Torque Sensing Limited Slip Differential (TORSEN LSD). This device automatically varies the amount of torque to each axle according to driving and terrain conditions. For example, during acceleration, more torque will be diverted to the rear wheels whereas under deceleration, more torque will go to the front wheels. The optimum distribution of torque between front and rear wheels means there is better stability, improved steering response and less tendency to understeer.

The Fortuner‟s off-road capability is extended with the availability of a second gear set that provides exceptionally low ratios. This will come in useful in extremely muddy conditions or steep slopes where maximum torque is required, or when towing very heavy loads. It is also possible to lock the centre differential to achieve a 50:50 torque split for traction in the most difficult conditions. Selection of locked differential in High or Low gear ranges is by a second lever ahead of the shift lever; for the Low range, it should be done at speeds below 8 km/h or at a standstill.

Large and wide 17-inch alloy rims are fitted to the Fortuner and for the new model, the rim design has been changed to complement the new refreshed appearance.

The Fortuner‟s chassis, referred to as the TOP (Toyota Outstanding Performance) platform, features a highly rigid frame with strengthened front and rear suspension mounts. Coil spring suspension is used both front (independent double wishbone) and rear (4-links with a lateral control rod) for a level of ride comfort that is not normally experienced in SUVs of this class.

The high ground clearance of 220mm allows the Fortuner it to cross streams and flooded stretches easily while generous approach and departure angles mean that it can negotiate bumpy terrain without scraping the ground.

Should the Fortuner be driven over very rough ground, the underside of the engine, the transfer case and fuel tank are protected from damage by guard panels.

Safety is a top priority for Toyota and every model it develops must meet the company‟s own tough safety standard known as GOA (Global Outstanding Assessment). This tough in-house safety standard, matches or exceeds international safety standards. Some aspects of GOA are not required in international crash tests but Toyota still requires them.

With the GOA body, there is a very high level of Passive Safety provided so that injuries to occupants are minimized or even avoided during a severe accident. The forces of the impact, from any side, are dissipated before they reach inside the cabin to cause harm. Even the TOP platform plays a role here with a brace at its lower front end which reduces intrusion of suspension towers into the cabin. Within the cabin, certain areas which occupants‟ heads may hit during an accident are fitted with impact-absorbing materials to prevent injuries.

Beside standard SRS airbags for both front occupants, other safety features available in every Fortuner include a laminated non-shattering windscreen, powerful brake system with anti-lock system (ABS), Load-Sensing Proportioning and Bypass Valve (LSP & BV) to adjust the brake force to the rear brakes, collapsible steering column, anti-intrusion brake pedal and seatbelts for all seven occupants.

The Fortuner is equipped with a comprehensive security system that is benchmarked to the UK Thatcham-1 security standard. The system consists of an engine immobiliser, cabin sensor, tilt-sensor (to detect unauthorized towing), siren with back-up battery and Auto Door Lock which custom designed that passed all Toyota standard test and certified as Toyota Genuine Accessory. For convenience, controls for the system are integrated in a single key.

Other optional accessories available for the Fortuner are Premium Solar Film to keep solar heat out of the cabin and improve motoring comfort, a DVD-AVN system which has many more advanced features which includes DVD-Player, MP3, AUX-Jack, USB, iPod compatibility, Bluetooth, Navigation system as well as a Reverse Camera that display images on a large 6.1-inch colour monitor. The Navigation system adopts a gyro speed sensor that is able to operate when GPS signal is lost (e.g. passing through a tunnel). The map coverage includes Malaysia, Brunei and Singapore, with a 1-time free map update. Additionally, the navigation map is customized with Toyota Sales and Aftersales network for customer‟s convenience.

All optional accessories must be specified by the customer at the time of purchase as they will be installed by specially-trained Toyota personnel at a dedicated facility ensuring high quality fitment before delivery.

As with most of the models offered by UMW Toyota Motor, the new Toyota Fortuner comes with a 3-years/100,000 kms (whichever occurs earlier after first registration) warranty, subject to conditions stated in the Owner‟s Handbook. This reflects the confidence that UMW Toyota Motor has in the superior build quality of its vehicles, a hallmark of Toyota products.
