New Subaru Legacy: Boxer VIP

Published on October 15th, 2010

Finally, a car you can use to drive to office, bring the family to spend the weekend somewhere, and when you’re bored pull the handbrake and slam the throttle and still make it for dinner. This is the new Subaru Legacy.

The Legacy has always been Subaru’s flagship model and served as a competitor against other makes such as Camry and Sylphy. The introduction of the first generation of Legacy dates all the way back to around twenty years ago in 1989, with a little history of legendary rally wars between it and the Mitsubishi Galant VR4 and a hint of SuperGT participation.

Subaru took a leap of faith with this fifth-gen Legacy as the car is fully redesigned to retain its sporty image as well as giving the car a new premium-like feel.

The new Legacy is utilising the heritage of the Symmetrical All-Wheel-Drive (AWD) system and running on the famous 2,457cc Horizontally-Opposed (BOXER) 285hp with 350Nm of torque engine. As always with the Legacy, the car comes with a sedan version, named Legacy 2.5GT Sedan (RM269,000 w/out insurance), and a wagon version, named Legacy 2.5GT Wagon (RM279,000 w/out insurance). The car is safer too, with the newly regined E-5AT auto tranny mated with Variable Torque Distribution All-Wheel Drive (VTD), which distributed the engine’s torque to all four wheels while giving a little more priority towards the rear wheels. We fell in love immediately.

“The all new Subaru Legacy series has surpassed all expectations with its redesign and enhanced features. It has been highly anticipated and already won a lot of accolades. We are confident that the cars will add to an already strong following of the Legacy,” said Glenn Tan, executive director, Tan Chong International Limited Subaru.

The electronically controlled 5-speed transmission features driver-adaptive shifting, blipping control for quicker, smoother downshifts, and manual-style control via paddle shifters. Subaru-Intelligent Drive (SI-DRIVE) is also featured on these models with three different modes (Intelligent, Sport and Sport Sharp) to suit three specific driving feels, styles and situations.

The new Legacy features a newly-developed “cradle engine mounting system” which contributes to noise reduction and enhanced stability for a more refined ride. The “ringshaped reinforcement frame body”, has evolved providing higher-impact absorbing capacity for multiple directions. This unique technology found in all Subaru cars, together with the new cradle mounting system, effectively improves, especially the front section of the car. All-round safety is further ensured with the Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC) system and dual front, side, curtain and knee airbags.

Check the Legacy out and test drive one of these babies at any Motor Image showrooms in Malaysia. Head over to Motor Image’s website for more information.

Can we have one to play with, please? We’ll behave. Promise.
