Naza will now command The General in Malaysia

The ailing fortunes of the Chevrolet army in Malaysia has been given a shot in the arm with reinforcements from the Naza battalion that has penned a distributorship agreement with General Motors.

This makes Naza Group the sole and exclusive authorized distributor for the Chevy brand of vehicles on our shores.

Under the agreement, Naza Group will effectively take over the current Chevy network of dealers as well as establish new ones to sell and service chevy vehicles as well as parts and accessories. As the Naza Group will start the agreement by taking control of the current dealerships, business will continue as usual with no disruptions.

With Naza Group having its own assembly plant in Gurun, Kedah, the possibility of CKD operations are a logical foreshadowing and the two parties are currently discussing the possibility to offer them by 2011.

The agreement was signed by Datuk Haji SM Faisal SM Nasimuddin, Joint Executive Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Naza Group of Companies and Steve Carlisle, General Motors South East Asia Operations President.

“This landmark signing is a way forward for the Group to offer a wider choice of vehicles to Malaysians, besides bringing in the best technology has to offer, and from a reputable and established brand like Chevrolet,” said SM Faisal.

“The possibility of locally assembling Chevrolet vehicles has brought interesting prospects as it further solidifies Naza’s aim of providing premium products and services to Malaysians, in addition to placing Malaysia as the hub for Chevrolet cars within the region,” he added.

“With Naza’s position in the Malaysian automotive industry, as well as its capability, track record and forward-looking corporate philosophy, I am confident we have found the right partner with whom we can focus on working towards our mutual goals of growth and expansion in the Malaysian market,” said Carlisle.

Naza Group plans to offer the full range of Chevy vehicles available in the region and heading the model line-up will undoubtedly be the global-market Chevy Cruze that will be offered here in 1.8-liter guise with a six-speed auto and should be available by the second quarter.

Being a global-market product, the five-star Euro NCAP Cruze has hit all the right notes in its tune and is a leading product in its segment in a few markets around the globe.

Trucks are very synonymous with the General’s name and following the intoroduction of the Cruze, trucks rate highly on the models to be offered here. Conveniently, a financial set up in Thailand allows for CKD operations of Chevy trucks in our northern neighbours and localization for the Malaysian market is will carried out to fit the consumer’s requirements here.

Of course, the trucks will be powered by the new diesel engines that are set to push the General’s heavy duty offerings for the next few years.

Currently there are eight Chevy dealerships locally and Naza aims to increase the number to a healthier 18 across the country by the end of the year with distributors planning five of its very own branches. All new dealerships will also be full 3S facilities whilst the current ones that aren’t will be upgraded to fit the requirements for the customers’ convenience, including the dealerships in Sabah and Sarawak.

In a transition such as this, warranty claims usually end up in the grey area but not in this case. All warranty claims from the previous dealer agreement will be carried forward and holders should have no problems in claiming their warranty if anything goes wrong.

Since the ink on the agreement hasn’t even dried yet and many things are still in the water-cooler discussion stage, Naza Group has set a modest target of selling 1,200-1,500 units of Chevy vehicles this year.

Now just in case you’re wondering if Corvette’s and Camaro’s might become a more regular sight on our roads, well… they refused to say yay or nay so keep your fingers crossed.
