NASIM premiers the Peugeot 207 with former Malaysian premier tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad in Putrajaya

NASIM Sdn. Bhd., the official distributor of the Peugeot brand in Malaysia, recently launched the much-anticipated and talked about Peugeot 207, which is the first Peugeot to be produced in Malaysia that will be exported to other right-hand drive markets in Asia, as well as the now peaceful Sri Lanka. Malaysia’s fourth Prime Minister, Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, officially launched the Peugeot 207 in Malaysia’s administrative capital, Putrajaya.

Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of NASIM and Joint Group Executive Chairman of the Naza Group of Companies, SM Nasarudin SM Nasimuddin, said, “The Peugeot 207 is aimed at urban consumers, young couples, and people with young families. The Peugeot 207 is aesthetically appealing, generously equipped, safe and above all, an absolute delight to drive.”

SM Nasarudin said that NASIM is targeting to sell between 5,000 to 6,000 units of the Peugeot 207 next year, a figure which took many motoring journalist in attendance at the launch by surprise, wishful thinking as some might dare to say, as the B-segment car market in which the Peugeot will be competing in has become very competitive with rival car companies having also launched their models which will rival the Peugeot 207, just recently before the Peugeot 207’s launch. The Peugeot 207 will also be exported to other right hand-drive countries in the region such as Thailand, Indonesia, Brunei as well as the now peaceful Sri Lanka.

Earlier this year, Automobiles Peugeot appointed NASIM as its partner to make Malaysia its manufacturing hub for the Asian region. The Peugeot 207 is the first car to be launched under this agreement.

SM Nasarudin also commented, “As a B-Segment car, the Peugeot 207 heads into an extremely competitive market currently dominated by Japanese makes. But we firmly believe there is a current shift in the market towards European brands, especially in the aforementioned segment.”

SM Nasarudin added that NASIM will begin exporting the 207 immediately and the car will be featured at the 2011 Bangkok International Motor Show. Surprisingly there was no mention at press time and during the launch of the Peugeot 207 being featured at the upcoming Kuala Lumpur International Motor Show which is just around the corner and on home turf.

The Peugeot 207 comes equipped with a 1.6L powerplant, and it does display a bold exterior with Peugeot’s trademark styling that sets it apart from the other makes in the segment, especially the front of the car which seems to have a lot of approving and refreshing styling ques which seemed to be borrowed from the popular and well-received 308. Although at the rear, the 207 seems uninspiring and somewhat dated as it seems like it has a stretched 206 Bestari’s rear. To be fair, the competitive and expressive lines of the 207 that flows through its shell from the front to back does give it a unique stance with a tinge of European flair, and its 15-inch Interlagos alloy wheels does complement the car’s exterior design well, as Peugeot claims this set of rims also illustrates the car’s premium quality and dynamism.

Inside the cabin of the Peugeot 207, the interior is said to be elegant yet contemporary with the inclusion of a leather-wrapped steering wheel, automatic air-conditioning with a pollen filter, an instrument panel made by luxury-watch maker, Jaeger, a multifunction display, sensor-activated automatic headlights and wipers. These accessories are a most welcome inclusion for a B-segment car which most definitely will attract a lot of interested prospectful buyers to it, but styling wise in the cabin, it is still reminiscent of the old 206 Bestari.

Where In-Car-Entertainment (ICE) is concerned, herein lies one of the 207’s strengths, as the 207 offers premium audio capabilities with an MP3/WMA CD player with USB, and auxiliary functionality connected to a ‘pleasing-on-the-ears’ six-speaker system. The player is also fitted with Bluetooth connectivity that can be paired with a cellular phone.

The front seats, set with a semi-bucket design, can be adjusted in a multitude of positions and provides greater confidence for dynamic driving as it does seem to provide for good lateral support which will be thoroughly appreciated during long drives. The boot space of the 207 is yet another one of its strengths as it has a huge boot space that can accomodate 420 litres, which is more than enough for a small family. Additionally, the 207 comes with door pockets with bottle recesses, while the glove compartment offers ample storage and a handy cup, pen and sunglass holder.

One of the key attractions of the 207 is its drivability thanks to its Peugeot trademark road-holding capabilities and sequential transmission. The car is optimized to offer both comfort and dynamism as a result of an inverted pseudo-MacPherson strut where the architecture has been developed to improve the caster angle to ensure steering accuracy and feel while the rear suspension is equipped with an anti-roll bar.

The 207’s four cylinder 1.6L engine produces a decent 110hp at 5,800rpm and a respectable 149Nm of torque at 4,000rpm to lug its kerb weight of 1,140kg’s around and about. It features hydraulic variable power steering to allow the driver to better understand the road surface and maximize driving pleasure while the 207’s four-speed adaptive automatic transmission comes with Tiptronic capabilities to enable the driver to engage the gears manually. A similar system was employed in the 206 Bestari and when in manual mode, the transmission failed to impress as it lacked smooth transition from gear to gear. The transmission is also fitted with a sport mode for more priority on vehicle performance and acceleration and a snow/traction mode to provide more grip on slippery surfaces. Fuel consumption for the 207 is rated according to Peugeot at 6.1-litres per 100 km (mixed cycle).

In terms of safety, the 207 is loaded with a host of safety features such as, Anti Brake Locking System (ABS), Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD), Emergency Brake Assist (BA), two smart airbags for the front passengers – which inflate in relation to the intensity of the impact – a rolling code immobilizer, “follow-me-home” functionality for the front headlights, and auto-hazard warning lights which are activated upon sudden and heavy braking.

Particular attention is also given for infant and child safety with two ISOFIX attachment points at the rear for child safety seats while the front passenger airbag can be deactivated to safely install a child seat at the front passenger seat.

The 207 features a monocoque body structure with high yield strength steel built into the critical areas of the body shell and is programmed with energy absorption and deformation zones.

“Like its tagline, the Peugeot 207 certainly is an irresistible car, and is the beginning of a new strategy for Peugeot in Malaysia and the rest of the region, and we believe we will be able to achieve our forecasted and projected sales target, ” said a confident SM Nasarudin.

The Peugeot 207 retails for RM$72,888.00 On-The-Road with Insurance for individual private registration, and RM$73,332.80 for company private registration. The Peugeot 207 comes with a three year or 100,000km (whichever comes first) warranty.
