Celebrities from the local entertainment and footballing world were united as they came out to lend their support towards the Malaysia Merdeka Endurance Race (MMER) which is set to hit Sepang again this 15th to 17th September.

Among the stars from the local entertainment world who attended the ‘Malam Amal Ramadan Sempena Malaysia Merdeka Endurance Race 2011’, were actor, Fizo Omar, popular tv show host, Dira Abu Zahar from Melodi with fellow compere and Raja Lawak alumni, Zizan.

The level of excitement was raised a notch as Harimau Malaya captain, Safiq Rahim and team mates from the Selangor football team, Amirulhadi Zainal and Asraruddin Putra Omar made their entrance, taking time off from their busy schedule preparing for the upcoming Malaysia Cup, to grace the event.

Not to forget, a few racers also took time off from their busy schedule to lend their support among them the famous racing siblings, ‘Brothers in Racing’ comprising Nazir, Ridzuan and Khairul, with their father well known face in the political circles, Minister in The Prime Minister’s Department, Tan Sri Nor Mohamed Yakcop.

The guests were treated to a sumptuous buka puasa, as the trophy for this year’s event was unveiled by famous jewellery brand, Tiffany and Co who also provided the trophies for the Formula One in March and the upcoming MotoGP in October.

In a change from past year’s launches, SIC organised a special buka puasa for 101 orphans and under privileged children from Pertubuhan Rumah Anak Yatim / Miskin Daerah Kuala Langat and Rumah Amal Asnaf Al-Barakh Telok Datok, Banting, incorporating elements of Ramadan into our event this year, aptly named ‘Malam Amal Ramadan Sempena Malaysia Merdeka Endurance Race 2011’.

In the spirit of Ramadan, the orphans will be safely ferried from their orphanage and as a special treat as they will be driven around the 5.543km track in special buses provided by our transportation partners Sky Bus (Sky Bus Ventures Sdn Bhd).

As an added treat, SIC Chairman, Dato Mokhzani Mahathir and CEO, Datuk Razlan Razali presented all 101 children with ‘duit raya’, sponsored in part by SIC and also each and every staff in SIC.

For the guests and media, they were also invited to join the orphans on the track on as they got a rough idea on the layout of the track which will be provide the setting for the race which will not only present a test of the machine’s capability but the will power of the racers to tough it out for 12 hours non-stop.

SIC decided that this year’s edition will be held on this historic day for the first time as this day signifies the unity between Peninsular Malaysian and Sabah and Sarawak and what makes this occasion more meaningful is that this day has been gazetted as a public holiday by the government since last year.

Previous editions had been held during Merdeka Day which has seen an encouraging response from the public with the MMER being an instant hit with international teams and drivers from world renowned endurance series including the LeMans 24 Hours, Nurburgring 24 Hours and Dubai 24 Hours make their way to SIC.

This year’s edition is no less exciting with current Le Mans champion, Marcel Fassler from Switzerland along with co-drivers, two time Le Mans winner (2006 & 2007), Frank Biela from Germany and compatriot, Marco Werner confirming their entry for Audi in the GT Class.

The German carmaker have also confirmed another entry GT Class with Canadian born Chinese touring car driver, Darryl O’ Young at the helm, ably supported by Seiji Ara from Japan and our very own former Formula One driver, Alex Yoong.

As of now, 42 cars have confirmed their entry with the bulk coming from the Touring Production with 28, followed by 10 in the GT Class and 4 in the Sport Production.

With Malaysians well known for doing things at the last minute, SIC, expects more participants to confirm their entry this 4th September.

MMER is the brainchild of then SIC Chairman, the late Tan Sri Basir Ismail and it is one racing event which has made its mark in the national’s motorsports history by being the first 12-hour endurance race organised and promoted by locals.

For the local motorsports enthusiasts, the MME is much awaited for every year since 2000. The 12 – hour endurance will definitely put the drivers’ skill, teams’ management and the machines to the limits. The team will have three drivers who will race for at least 70 minutes being before allowed to switch.

The first year of its inception saw 55 teams competing in the MME and in the 11 years of its history has seen the who’s who of Malaysian motorsports making their mark, among them Karamjit Singh, Jimmy Low, Keifli Othman and Adam Lokman were among the racers who show off their driving skills on the 5.543km track.

Current SIC Chairman, Dato’ Mokhzani Mahathir ably supported by Lars Eric Nielsen and Sven Herberger achieve a landmark win in 2007 with Hong Leong Kencana Racing Team, while setting a new record for the most number of laps – 288 – in the Open Class.

Last year saw Arrows Racing led by T Hammam, Peter Kox and C Haase emerged victorious in the Class GT after completing 315 laps while in the Sports Production, M Kawaguchi, M Ueda and Adam Han drove home after 273 laps for the win.

Honda Malaysia Racing Team did Malaysia proud when the romped to victory in the Touring Production with Eddie Liew, Aaron Lim, Rueben Wong completing 281 laps.

For the fans who will be coming to give their support to the competing teams, there will many side events for them while their favourite racers sweat it out on the track.
