MMER 2011: Blood is thicker than water for Brothers in Racing as they aim for the sky in the MMER

Published on September 16th, 2011

Proving that the adage that ‘blood is thicker than water’ the relationship between famous racing siblings, ‘Brothers in Racing’ have stood the test of time in the 6 years they have competed together in the Malaysia Merdeka Endurance Race (MMER) which flags off tomorrow.

While many family outfits have disintegrated due to differences of opinion and pressures of working together in a competitive environment, the three siblings, Nazir, Ridzuan, Khairul have seen their team go from strength to strength and will be gunning for their 6th appearance in the MMER this year.

It obviously helps if your father is a prominent member in the political circles, Tan Sri Nor Mohamed Yakcop who is Minister in The Prime Minister’s Department, but Nazir says that’s not a very fair assumption given that their father was initially opposed to the trio getting involved in racing.

“At first our father was reluctant to give his blessing for us to race. He was worried because all three of his sons wanted to race, he could even bear the thought of even one of them getting involved in motorsports.

“But we managed to convince him and through our perseverance managed to get our team up and running in 2005 and made our debut in the MMER the following year. With this, being our 6th year, I am proud to say that we are one of the fully local teams in the MMER, with the drivers including the whole crew all being Malaysian,” said a beaming Nazir.

Following the footsteps and cues of successful family based racing teams such as Wood Brothers Racing, the oldest operating Nascar Cup Series team of NASCAR fame makes Brothers in Racing, a unique phenomenon on the MMER scene.

“We initially contested for the first time in the MMER in a Honda Civic (EG6). Our first participation gave us the valuable experience needed for race planning, inventory forecast and proper execution which helped us gain a more competitive edge.”

“In 2007 & 2008, we replaced the Honda Civic (EG6) with a more powerful member of the Civic family, the Honda Civic (EK9) Type R in order to have a better shot at doing well in the race.”

“We replaced the EK9 in 2009 with a Honda Integra (DC5). After 5 years of driving the Honda, this year we have decided to shift to a faster car, the Nissan Fairlady Z 380 RS.”

“For the first time in our history, we will be racing in the Sports Production after racing all this while in the Touring Production.”

“We are planning to go one step further, competing in the GT Class. We have been fans of racing all this while, even the ‘illegal’ ones.”

“If the support is forthcoming and if there are sponsors and exposure from the media, we are willing to go all the way to the top, that is our ultimate aim,” said Nazir.
