After creating a whole new segment by itself way back in 1998, Lexus has today introduced to the Malaysian market the new Lexus RX in its 4th generation form. Debuting at the New York International Auto Show back in April 2015, this new Lexus RX comes into Malaysia in CBU form. On launch there are 6 available variants and 2 different engines to choose from which starts with the RX200t Premium at RM388,800, RX200t Luxury at RM408,400, RX200t F SPORT at RM422,900, RX350 luxury at RM457,800, RX350 F SPORT at RM486,300 and the range-topping RX450h at RM520,200.

Yes, you see it right, the new Lexus RX does come with the latest 8AR-FTS 2.0 turbo engine which made its debut in its sister car, the Lexus NX. This engine would replace the previous generation RX270 in its model line-up. The 2-liter turbo engine with 235HP and 350Nm of torque on tap is available with the familiar 2GR-FE 3.5 liter V6 engine with 295HP and 370Nm of torque in the RX350 and a reworked engine in the RX450h which now outputs 258HP and 335Nm which couples with a Lexus Hybrid Drive system to deliver a figure of 308HP. The 2.0 liter engine is available with a 6-speed Super ECT automatic transmission while the 3.5 liter V6 is available with a 8-speed transmission. The RX450h meanwhile makes do with a CVT transmission to further enhance efficiency.

Other changes in the new model include the overall design of the car which is more currently in tune with the current Lexus design ideology which includes the huge spindle grille and the sharp design of the headlamps which incorporate LED lighting technology. The overall proportions of the car is maintained but the changes are that the length has been increased by 120mm which in turn allows the wheelbase to be stretched to another 50mm.

As with every Lexus line-up bar the Lexus ES, there is an F SPORT variant for the respective engines except for the RX450h. The differentiation includes an extra drive mode which is the SPORT S+ mode and a new “CUSTOMIZE” setting that enables a user-defined setting for the engine, chassis and air-conditioning functions. This is on top of the exclusive F SPORT leather seats with distinctive stitching that also extends to the steering wheel with paddle shifters and shifter knob, aluminum on the ornament panels and foot pedals as well as an instrument panel that includes a G-Ball & Boost meter. Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management is also available for the F SPORT variants.

In the interior, Lexus has made available a Heads-up Display which is exclusively available for the RX350 F SPORT and RX450h. Audio systems include a Lexus Premium Audio Surround System with 12-speakers and on the top 2 variants a 15-speaker system supplied by Mark Levinson. It also has the Qi-wireless charging for supported mobile devices, according to variants a 8-inch or 12.3 inch monitor, power reclining and power folding 60:40 split rear seat and power rear-boot doors which in the top 2 models get a touch-operation. Safety is taken care of across the variants with 10 SRS airbags around the cabin, ABS with EBD and BA, Traction control, Vehicle Stability Control and Hill-Start Assist Control. Tyre Pressure Warning System, Panoramic View Monitor, Rear Cross Traffic Alert with Blind Spot Monitor system complements the driver with additional safety.

Buyers are able to choose from 8 exterior colors which are Platinum Silver Metallic, Sonic Quartz, Sonic Titanium, Red Mica Crystal Shine, Graphite Black Glass Flake, Amber Crystal Shine and Deep Blue Mica with White Nova Glass Flake exclusively available for the F-Sport variants. Of note, all new Lexus RX coming from Japan is painted with a scratch-resistant self-restoring coat which uses a high-performance macromolecular polymer.
