Malaysian Super Series 2010 Dilantha awesome in new Lamborghini

Published on July 17th, 2010

Malaysian Super Series (MSS) two-time champion Dilantha Malagamuwa needed little time to understand his Lamborghini LP560 as he blazed through qualifying in Round 2 of the Malaysian GT Series at Sepang Circuit today to take pole position for tomorrow’s race.

The new LP560, which only arrived at the circuit directly from Germany this morning, clocked 2 minutes 9.588 seconds around the 5.543-kilometer and the Sri Lankan driver were all smiles at the paddock as he expressed delight in the performance of his prized possession.

“I am very happy with the performance and I know that it can go even faster tomorrow. I did not really need to push the car today,” said Japan-based Dilantha, adding that the entry the Malaysian GT Series was not the main purpose of the car.

“I am having this car for the Merdeka Millennium Endurance Race (MMER). That’s the real battle,” said Dilantha, who also entered the Lamborghini LP560 in the GT3 Asia Series that was incorporated in this weekend’s third round of the MSS.

It was a stiffer competition though in the GT3 Asia Series, which had 14 entries, which included top Singaporean driver, Mok Weng Sun, a two-time MSS champion, overall winner of the 12-hour MMER in 2008 and double winner at the opening round of the new Malaysian GT Series last month.

In a 30-minute contest for tomorrow’s grid positions, both drivers were regularly swapping the top of the timing chart; but was eventually topped by Mok, who was skipping the Malaysian GT round to focus fully on the GT3 Asia. Mok, who drove his regular MMER machine – the Porsche GT3 Cup S – clocked 2 minutes 8.242 seconds against Dilantha’s 2 minutes 8.718 seconds.

Unlike Mok, Dilantha has yet to taste glory at the MMER and would be desperate to at least score his first podium win this year.

The 11th edition of the 12-hour endurance race will be held from August 5 to 8 with the race back to its traditional midnight start.
