Lotus Formula One test driver Fairuz to race in MMER

Published on August 1st, 2010

The 11th edition of the Merdeka Millennium Endurance Race promises to be a very exciting and challenging race with the participation of Malaysian Formula One Lotus Team test driver, Mohamed Fairuz Fauzy.

Mohamed Fairuz and his brother, 2004 MMER overall winner Farriz will be fielding an Aston Martin GT4 for Team MOFAZ Racing in the MMER Sports Production Class. The brothers will be joined by former German F3 driver Rizal Ashram Ramli.

The MMER is the most competitive endurance race in South East Asia, with professional drivers and ex-motoring car drivers taking part in the race. This year’s newly revamped MMER race structure introduces two additional competition classes -the GT Class and the Sports Production Class.

When asked to comment on Fairuz’s participation in MMER, Lotus Team principal Datuk Seri Tony Fernandes said it would be exciting to watch Fairuz in action on Malaysian tracks.

“He had told me about racing in the MMER when we were at Silverstone, and he was saying that he’S really looking forward to it.

“I think it would be great to see him race on the Malaysian tracks once again. He has been in four rounds in the Formula One so far and he’s excited to be back racing in Sepang,” said Fernandes.

Mohamed Fairuz is the second Malaysian to have made it to Formula One after Alex Yoong, who is currently the Head of Driver Development for Team Lotus F1 Racing. Yoong will also be taking part in the MMER this year, partnering former Porsche Carrera Cup Asia champion Matthew Marsh and Marchy Lee Ying Kin in a Lamborghini LP560.

Fernandes said Fairuz’s participation in the MMER would further boost the young driver’s skills and talents, adding that it would be a welcomed experience. “I think all races are good, especially endurance races. The MMER would test the driver’s skills and would definitely be a challenge for the participants.

“The MMER is not an easy battle,it is equivalent to four Formula One race. I think that it would be good for Fairuz as he hasn’t had a lot of opportunity to race, to be honest, so the more race he takes part in, the better he will become. I will definitely be rooting for the team,”

The 2010 MMER race will be held at the Sepang International Circuit from Aug 5 to 8. A total of 36 cars have registered to compete in the newly introduced GT Class, the Sports Production Class and the Touring Production Class, which replaced the open class, Class A1 and A2 that were introduced last year. The race is scheduled to start at the stroke of midnight on Aug 8 and finishing at noon.
