Long live the Lancer with a grander Grandis

Published on August 12th, 2009

Typically, most Japanese car makers will give their models a mid-life cycle injection of life to renew and invigorate interest in their models. The changes could sometimes fill the Dead Sea Scrolls twice over just about cover one side of a Post-It note. That time has come for Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia (MMM) to do just that for their Lancer 2.0 GT sedan offering as well as the Grandis MPV and bless their tri-diamond stars they have kept the changes closer to the latter.

Now although the changes for the 2009 Lancer lack much sophistication, it is by far anything but lackluster. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it; and as such MMM have decided to just tweak the cosmetics a bit while making the sedan a more comfortable place to be in.

The Lancer now sports the front fascia previously seen on the Lancer Sportback with a chrome outlining of the grille as well as having the solid bar across the grille blackened out to bump up the aggression factor.

Apart from that, the Lancer pretty much remains the same as it was with the 2.0-litre 4B11 engine mated to an INVECS-III CVT with paddle shifters and six predefined gear ratios. Power figures stand unperturbed at 153hp and 199Nm of twisty force.

The lower spec Lancer GS has also been dropped from the line-up, leaving the GT as the sole spec available. Keeping the occupants safe are the usual ABS, EBD, dual two-stage airbags while Nappa leather seats with a six-speaker CD and MP3 sound system keep them occupied on long drives.

A dash of colour always adds some spice to life and MMM have introduced the White Solid colour option for the Lancer GT to replace the Cool Silver Metallic and complement the Black Mica and Red Metallic. If you’re looking to drive one home, be set to part with RM123,980.00 (OTR w/o insurance).

Just like its sedan brethren, the Grandis formula has been a very successful one in the MPV segment with its generous offerings of space, comfort, quality and affordability.

The facelifted Grandis now comes with a bodykit that consists of a front, rear and side lips to give it a sportier look while door visors all-around complete the exterior enhancements.

On the inside, scuff plates, combination black leather for all seats and door trims, leather wrapped steering wheel and gearknob as well as a double-DIN 6.2-inch Kenwood DVD receiver with touch screen interface, USB connectivity as well as iPod and Bluetooth support make the journey more enjoyable for the occupants.

All these updates will now set you back RM160,557.80 (OTR w/o insurance). The colour options available are White Pearl, Black Mica, Cool Silver and Gray Mica.
