Local Honda’s not dragged into recall-gate

Published on February 10th, 2010

It’s recall season in Japan as Honda has been forced to expand a recall of some North American and Japanese models manufactured between 2001 and 2002 in relation to a defect in the driver’s SRS airbag but Malaysian Honda owners can safely dispose the notion of self-activating airbags as local models are NOT affected by the recall.

The majority of the vehicles are from the North American and Japanese market but includes some other regions as well although Malaysia is not one of them. The total figures of recalled vehicles stand at 437,763 units worldwide.

However, based on analysis and investigations, Honda has decided to expand that initial recall to include vehicles manufactured between November 2008 and June 2009 (July in Japan) although no incidents of airbag failure has been reported. This brings the total units recalled to 514,355 from all regions affected.

The recall stems from defective inflator propellant (the chemical substance that generates gas to inflate the airbag) that might increase the pressure of the inflating airbag, thus causing the lining to rupture and fragments to scatter around that may injure the occupants.

Standard recall procedure will see the inflator in the driver’s side SRS airbag be replaced with a non-defective unit.
