Lexus Malaysia makes a bold environment-friendly move by introducing luxury hybrid models

Published on November 25th, 2010

Lexus Malaysia raised quite a few eyebrows recently when it made a bold yet environment-friendly move of introducing two luxurious hybrid models for the Malaysian market, one a classy, stylish and preferably chauffeur driven statement of wealth, the other being a formidable, comfortable and elegant Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV). The two hybrid models that made its joint debut in Malaysia, thanks to Lexus Malaysia, a division of UMW Toyota Motor Sdn. Bhd. Are none other than the LS 600h L and RX 450h.

The simultaneous launch of these two hybrid models signifies the arrival of the Lexus hybrid vehicles, which at present also happen to be the only full hybrid Luxury vehicles in Malaysia.

At the media launch event held at Lexus Malaysia’s palatial headquarters in Mutiara Damansara, Kuah Kock Heng, President of UMW Toyota Motor Sdn Bhd proudly stated, “Lexus is the first and only luxury car manufacturer to offer a comprehensive range of Hybrid vehicles. No other brand offers as much variety as Lexus.”

On a Global scale, Lexus is offering a total of 4 Hybrid models; the LS 600h L, the RX 450h, the GS 450h, and the HS 250h. The latest CT 200h will only be available in 2011. So it remains to be seen if Lexus Malaysia will up the ante and leave its rivals and competitors further behind in a hybrid sense by introducing the other two models in Malaysia, as well as the CT 200h, which would be interesting prospects to consider for the wealthy who want to do their little bit for the environment by purchasing environment-friendly luxury hybrid cars bearing the prestigious Lexus logo and insignia.

Since its introduction in 2005, the sales of the Lexus Hybrid range of vehicles have reached over 260,000 units across the world.  Since it was launched in 2007, more than 24,000 units of the Lexus Flagship model – the LS 600h L has been sold, while the RX 450h which was launched in 2009, has achieved an impressive sales figure of more than 70,000 units sold.

“Today marks a new chapter for Lexus Malaysia, as we are proud to bring the two most popular Lexus Hybrid models – the flagship LS 600h L and the Luxury SUV – RX 450h to the Malaysian market,” said a confident and beaming Kuah.

“We realize that the market for Lexus Hybrid vehicles are relatively small, but our aim is to offer to our customers the world’s most advanced hybrid vehicle and at the same time providing another choice for them,” he continued.

“Although the market may be limited right now, there is potential for future growth. We are confident that the interest and demand for Lexus Hybrid models will develop further in the coming years,” concluded. Kuah, rather truthfully and optimistically.

Also present at the launch were Tan Sri Asmat Kamaludin, the Chairman of UMW Toyota Motor, Takashi Hibi, the Deputy Chairman of UMW Toyota Motor, Dato’ Syed Hisham Syed Wazir, the new President and Group CEO of UMW Holdings Berhad, Naohisa Hatta, Assistant Chief Engineer in charge of developing the RX 450h for Toyota Motor Corporation, Japan, and Harry Loo Chee Yan, a Director of Lexus Malaysia.
