It ain’t what it used to be

Published on December 29th, 2010

It simply ain’t. The modification scene in Malaysia has improved a great deal since the time of carburetors and aligning tyres using threads. Back in college we tinkled with our own car, trying to get it lowered by sawing off too much of the springs and ended up with a car that can’t even move as the tyres already smooching ’em fenders and so… we’re back to square one getting the springs from the chop shop and sawing it off again to get the desired looks. To get it tinted, we opted for spray cans and got it all black without the ability to look through. Looks was never the first priority as the search of power was all we looked for and so I used to owned a turbocharged Familia with fingerprints left all over the white body to stay. Fellas who owned a Civic regardless with or without Vtec usually came from a well-to-do family and to actually own a Saga instead of a kapcai… you’ve already reached a level of greatness.

Those were the days that the only local motorsport event we look forward to was the Saturday Night Fever at the deeply missed BTSC (Batu Tiga Shah Alam Circuit). I can still remember back in the late 90’s, the legendary Alim PAJ who was driving an extremely fast yellow second generation Civic, the infamous Chicago Bears boys, Jimankiller who ran the white with pink pearl Evo3 on 17″ TE37, the ‘ol Mini ‘Perang’ which had to be pushed start to crank the engine and the ever annoying voice of Sutan Mustaffa Salihin commentating with sarcasm more frequent than not entertaining the spectators during the race.

Nowadays however, we have more grassroots motorsport events to go. The revival of Saturday Night Fever, TimeToAttack, SIC’s events, Formula D Asia thanks to Goodyear, ESPN and other sponsors as well as plenty other events kept us Traffic crews running around and burning the midnight candles to cover these events for more mileage and exposures in the interest of the development of motorsports. JPM-CIMB Time Challenge is where you get to see supercars battling it out at the serene Bukit Tinggi. One event that has been suffering in terms of coverage and exposure despite the increase of participation is Malaysian Rally Championship. We’re invited by SPS to tag along for the finale and it was refreshing being in Perlis with all the mud and what’s not instead of tarmac. For sure it’s an event to look out for in 2011. It was never easy but then all of it was worthwhile to say the least.

Abundant of overland activities is also organized. The Kembara Ke Bumi Suci 2010 featured a ride from Kuala Lumpur to the Holyland of Mecca while a solo feat by I am Malaysian rode a Kapcai all the way from Kuala Lumpur to London traversing 27 countries. I was really lucky to have the opportunity to be with Petronas Adventure Team for two years and get to travel and learn about other cultures and civilization during the expeditions.  There were so many overland adventures being organized and we can’t cover it all but for those who’re into these activities, do browse around the net and mark your calendar to experience it yourself.

There are a number of international motoring events to look forward to… F1, MotoGP, Asian Festival of Speed, Super GT and a whole lot more will be held at our shores for the interest of motorsports. We also heard from a reliable source that the K4GP will also be held at Sepang International Circuit this coming 15th of February. Do check it out as it’s really exciting apart from the long hours as it’s an endurance race. I can go on and on blabberin’ but then I’d keep it short and with that being said peeps…. Happy New Year 2011!
