Published on September 29th, 2010

ISUZU Malaysia recently announced the addition of another D-Max variant to its line-up of impressive pick-up trucks, the all new but familiar looking 4×4 double cab Isuzu D-Max 2.5-Litre Super Commonrail. This new model, which boasts of more exceptional fuel efficiency figures and returns, as well as highly flexible engine performance, is expected to change the mindset of motorists about the way pick-up trucks perform.

Featuring the advanced Super Commonrail diesel engine, the new D-Max is powered by Isuzu’s famed 4JK1-TC engine, one of the best selling 1-ton pick-up truck engines in the world with close to half a million units having been produced since its introduction in 2005.

Addressing members of the Malaysian motoring media fraternity and invited guests during the launch which was held in the Klang Valley, CEO of Isuzu Malaysia, Takashi Hata said that the new Isuzu D-Max 2.5-Litre 4×4 Super Commonrail model is expected to provide future potential customers with a pick-up truck that offers brisk performance with exceptionally low running costs.

“The new D-Max is aimed at the smart motorist who appreciates the technological advancements made in pick-up truck technology, yet demands its core strengths of versatility and toughness. Owners will find a very refined and smooth engine, with impressive responsiveness and even greater fuel economy with the new 2.5-Litre 4×4 D-Max,” said a smiling and beaming Hata-san.

Hata-san added that motorists now have a comprehensive selection of D-Max models to choose from to suit their lifestyle, business, and personal needs.

“There is now a D-Max that will fulfill all the needs and desires of a pick-up truck owner, be it for business or pleasure. Undoubtedly, whatever the choice, owners drive away with one of the most fuel efficient, durable, and reliable pick-up trucks available in the market today,” he confidently said.

Isuzu Malaysia expects the new 2.5-Litre 4×4 Super Commonrail model to help the company maintain its strong growth trend in the pick-up truck segment with monthly sales of 150 units of the new model adding to its current average monthly demand of 480 units nationwide.

At the heart of the new 2.5-Litre 4×4 Super Commonrail D-Max is its incredibly robust and highly-dependable force-fed 4-cylinder diesel engine. As with all Isuzu engines, the new 4JK1-TC engine is developed to provide reliable and efficient operation even when pushed to the extreme.

Inside, the engine boasts of a melt-in liner and two-storey water jacket to effectively dissipate heat from the engine block and cylinder head. Fuel, oil and an EGR cooler further keep the engine running at its optimal temperature range for better performance.

To further aid the efficiency of this robust and formidable fuel-efficient engine, light-weight and sturdy alloy pistons are employed, while the 16valves are actuated by roller rocker arms that offer quieter and smoother operation. These are driven by a timing gear and chain system that not only require zero maintenance for reduced running costs, it also provides peace of mind as unlike rubber beltings, the chain will not break unexpectedly, leaving the owner stuck and stranded somewhere fuming while having to face a possibly hefty repair bill.

The new 2,499cc force fed diesel engine also gets its excellent performance characteristics from its over-square configuration of 95.4mm x 87.4mm which gives the 2.5-Litre 4×4 Super Commonrail D-Max quite a sprightly performance. Maximum power of 116ps is produced at 3,600rpm, while maximum torque of 280Nm is developed from as low as 1,800rpm to 2,200rpm. This represents an increase of 47 percent more power and 59 percent more torque over the direct-injection 2.5-Litre D-Max.

This healthy performance is now mated to a new 5-speed manual transmission that is specially developed to match the performance characteristics of the new and more potent engine. This is further enhanced with the use of Isuzu’s famed Touch-On-The-Fly 4WD system that allows the driver to select between two- and four-wheel drive at speeds up to 100km/h at the simple touch of a button on the dashboard. ABS and EBD are also standard features on the new 2.5-Litre 4×4 Super Commonrail D-Max to enhance its safety capabilities and ratings.

Inside the cabin of the new 2.5-Litre 4×4 Super Commonrail D-Max, owners will enjoy a high level of equipment and sophistication. The interior finishing is identical to its bigger 3.0-Litre brethren’s. It comes with all the bells and whistles including its wonderful e-Lumax instrument panel complete with multi-information display, 2-DIN audio system, dual SRS airbags and a leather-wrapped gear knob and steering wheel in the full-specification model.

Outwardly too, the new 2.5-Litre 4×4 Super Commonrail model shares a similar equipment list as the 3.0-Litre model. This includes the use of powerful projector headlamps and fog lamps to keep driving safe even in the darkest and bleakest of nights, convenient aero-type side steps for easier entries and exits, attention grabbing chrome door mirrors with turn signal repeaters, and reverse sensors for better and easier manoeuvring when parking or reversing since it is quite a sizeable vehicle.

The new 2.5-Litre 4×4 Super Commonrail D-Max model will be available at all Isuzu dealerships throughout the country beginning October 1st, 2010. As an introductory offer, Isuzu Malaysia will have a ‘Smart Saver’ package where customers who purchase a double cabin D-Max will be entitled to a free Garmin GPS unit and a cash rebate (unknown at present time of release). This offer is valid according to specific terms and conditions till November 30th, 2010, or while stocks last. At present time of launch, Isuzu Malaysia revealed that the price for private registration, on the road with insurance in Peninsular Malaysia, for the 2.5-Litre 4×4 Super Commonrail D-Max(manual) type B is priced at RM82,155.40(RM82,481.40 for metallic coloured model), while the premium manual transmission model is priced at RM88,411.40(RM88,737.40 for metallic coloured model).
