Hyundai Motor joins the 2010 white band campaign

Published on October 20th, 2010

Hyundai Motor Company is participating in the 2010 White Band Campaign, a global awareness-raising campaign taking place in over 100 countries with the aim of ending poverty and inequality.

All employees worldwide are encouraged to wear the symbolic white bands, while a variety of supporting activities are being conducted at 47 major operations of Hyundai Motor and its affiliates in over 22 countries, ranging from customer events at dealerships to fund-raisings. Throughout the three-week long campaign, which began on the 11th of October, a white banner, reading the movement’s slogan “Stand Up, Take Action” will be displayed at all the participating operations, translated into their respective languages.

Launched in 2005, the White Band Campaign aims to raise public awareness of global poverty and promote MDG (Millennium Development Goals). These include the eradication of eight anti-poverty goals such as reducing child mortality and improving maternal health by 2015. The campaign has been carried out every year on the occasion of the UN-designated international day for the eradication of poverty, October 17.

Hyundai Motor has been participating in the campaign for four consecutive years since 2007 as part of its efforts to fulfill its duties as a global corporate citizen. An increasing number of affiliates, dealers and agencies have also been participating in the annual event, strengthening Hyundai’s Corporate Social Responsibility activities.

As part of the campaign, Hyundai Motor Company would like to also invite the public to share their thoughts on this social contribution program by writing a message on Hyundai’s CSR ‘Thanks Hyundai’ message board. Participation in this campaign is also part of with Hyundai Motor Company’s CSR programme under the slogan “Moving the World Together”. This CSR programme aims to reach out to as many people as possible around the world. From 32 countries in 2008, HMC has conducted CSR activities in 37 countries across six continents in 2009.

In Malaysia, Hyundai Motor Company’s sole distributor, Hyundai-Sime Darby Motors Sdn Bhd (HSDM), has also joined the campaign by contributing to the fund besides collecting donation from the public. HSDM will match ringgit for ringgit from the donations collected, and the total amount will then be handed over to the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) in support of the organisation’s global poverty eradication program.

All donations can be made from 11th October until 31st October 2010 via donation boxes placed at Hyundai 3S Centers, and receipt for tax deduction will be provided upon request. As part of its effort to raise awareness for this campaign, HSDM is giving out white wristbands to all its customers during the campaign period.
