Hybrid Safety Talk for Government Agencies

Published on July 29th, 2011

Honda Malaysia recently rounded up selected government agencies for a safety talk on the subject of handling and responding to road emergency involving vehicles with Integrated Motor Assist System (IMA) in Honda’s hybrid vehicles – IMA Safety Talk.

During the one-day talk, training personal from Honda Malaysia shared important information on appropriate procedure and techniques in responding to and handling of road emergency involving hybrid vehicles from Honda (Civic Hybrid and Insight) with representatives from relevant government agencies. The main objective of the seminar is to ensure the safety of both the rescue team and that of the victims in any rescue effort.

“There are some technological differences between a hybrid vehicle, particularly that of its high-voltage (DC100.8V for Insight and DC158V for Civic Hybrid) component, and those of a conventional vehicle,” said Mr. Yoichiro Ueno, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Honda Malaysia.

Mr. Yoichiro explained that the IMA system is essentially a system consists of battery with complex and highly responsive substance. Mishandling of the IMA system could cause serious injury, such as electric shock or inflammation, to the rescuer or the victim or both. Thus, rescue work must be correctly carried out in accordance with the requirements and procedure outlined in the Emergency Response Manual For Hybrid Vehicles from Honda Malaysia.

“That being the case, any rescue team should be adequately informed about the dos and don’ts prior to handling a hybrid vehicle involved in an accident. Otherwise, the safety of the rescue team and that of the victims could be gravely compromised,” emphasized Mr. Yoichiro.

Conducted by Honda Malaysia, the safety talk was attended by eighteen training representatives from Honda Assist and five government agencies: Jabatan Bomba Dan Penyelamat Malaysia (Bomba), Jabatan Pertahanan Awam Malaysia, Jabatan Pengangkutan Jalan Malaysia (JPJ), Jabatan Keselamatan Jalan Raya (JKJR) and Lembaga Lebuhraya Malaysia (LLM). Honda Assist is a dedicated agency that assists Honda vehicle owners in breakdown and accidents.

“There are more and more hybrid vehicles on the road and it is becoming more popular because of the tax incentive initiated by the government. This event is good because hybrid knowledge is not so readily available, not only among us, but also among other relevant parties such as police and highway patrol and the public,” commented El Taraff Mohd B. Zachariah, Officer from, Akademi Bomba & Penyelamat Malaysia, a participant of the event.

“This safety talk helps the rescue team, who might not be familiar with the vehicle characteristics, to make informed decision in rescue effort that involves a hybrid vehicle,” he added.
