Honda Insight: Cheapest Hybrid to date

Published on December 5th, 2010

Honda was one of the manufacturers with something up their sleeve during the launch of KLIMS2010 in PWTC. Honda has broken new barriers with the introduction of the new Honda Insight, which comes together with the latest Honda’s hybrid technology.

Priced at RM98,000 for on the road with insurance, the Insight is the cheapest Hybrid vehicle to date, and it’s an MPV! The first generation Insight was focused on economical fuel consumption, but this time around, Honda is aiming towards reasonably priced hybrid for the masses. I mean, you can look at the price tags of hybrid vehicles in Malaysia and well, going green is not so cheap after all.

“It is one thing to develop a green product that only the affluent can afford, but it our quest to create a widely used hybrid model, Honda challenged its engineers to build a hybrid for everyone. As such, our biggest challenge was to strike a balance between developing an advanced hybrid with practical and fun features, and reducing the cost of production,” said Shigeru Yamazaki, director of Honda Malaysia and GM of Automobile Business Division at Asian Honda.

“In addition to the 3-year warranty offered by Honda Motor, Japan, Honda Malaysia is extending another 2 years on top of that. The 5-year or 140,000km warranty (whichever comes first) is our commitment to promote the use of hybrid technology and to provide better customer satisfaction,” he said.

Furthermore, spare parts for the Insight will be reduced by 40%, and that includes the battery.

The Insight is powered by Honda’s new generation Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) system that recaptures and stored kinetic energy from vehicle braking and deceleration, and supplies additional power for acceleration when needed. It consist of a 88hp 1.3-liter SOHC i-VTEC engine, a 14hp electric motor and a newly improved Intelligent Power Unit (IPU) that has been made 19% more compact and 28% lighter in size for the new Insight.

The smaller size IPU has been relocated under the floor of the cargo area to create a 400-liter trunk space that could accommodate up to 3 golf bags and a 60-40 split backseat (which can be folded down to provide 584 liter of flat cargo load area). That’s a lot of space! We think you can fit a decent sized superbike in there.

The Insight is safe too! With 6 star JNCAP satefy rating for driver and 5 star JNCAP safety rating for passengers.

You can book the Insight now at any authorised Honda dealers nationwide. Call Honda toll free number at 1-800-88-2020 or head over to Honda’s website for more info.

You can also view the car at the KLIMS2010, which is happening now in PWTC until Dec 12, together with the much hyped Honda CR-Z.
