GT4 Race 1 (Round 3): Bilski caps a perfect weekend with second win

It was an action packed morning race with four drivers each taking a turn at the lead and battles going on up and down the grid throughout Round 4 of the GT4 Asia Cup. Daniel Bilski capped a perfect weekend when he claimed his second win, over the two days, ahead of the Dynaten Concord Motorsport duo Mark Williamson and Ryan Marsden in second and Track Torque Racing’s Matthew Perry in third.

The Team Road and Track driver had a hard day at work today chasing, pushing and being pressured throughout most of the race.

“That was incredibly hard work! From the start it was just frantic, I mean, into turn 1 I had a few cars going in at the same time on the inside and outside, I think it was five to six cars basically touching each other going into turn 1, it was absolutely manic,” said Bilski during the Post Race Press Conference.

The race started with pole sitter, Adrian Henry D’Silva keeping his position despite the hectic scramble into turn one at the start. Behind him Matthew Perry had a fantastic start and was up to second from fifth. From there, there was just half a second of gap between the duo.

Behind them, Daniel Bilski and Simon Waters were having a battle of their own, Bilski took third at the start and into lap 2, Waters reclaimed the position taking the inside of turn 15. Bilski kept close on the Dynaten Concorde Motorsports driver’s tail and took back the position one lap later.

On lap four, at the head of the pack, D’Silva made a mistake, taking too much of the curb and spun leaving Perry to claim the race lead followed by Bilski. D’Silva rejoined the race right in front of Waters leaving Perry to fend off the fast charging Bilski.

By lap 5, Bilski started making his move on Perry, driving side by side. Behind them, D’Silva quickly made up for his mistake and began his charge on Bilski. Towards the end of lap 6, the Nexus Racing driver took the inside line at the last turn to claim second.

As the pit-stop window opened, the positions changed once again when Perry did his stop leaving D’Silva to take the lead and thereafter Bilski claimed the top spot and finally Waters, who rejoined ahead of Bilski. Waters was holding his ground as the previous race leaders rejoined the race but was served with a drive through penalty after he was found to not have fulfilled his mandatory 70 seconds during his stop.

Bilski benefited from this as he was right behind Waters after the stops and reclaimed the lead he held all the way to the chequered flag. “Motorsport Asia has got a great series going on here, it can’t get any more interesting than this weekend” he concluded with a big smile.

Behind all this, Ryan Marsden was having a great race, making his way up the ranks and having a battle with Nigel Farmer in the Ginetta along the way. At the pit-stop window Marsden and the Dynaten Concord Motorsports had a perfect stop, changing drivers with Mark Williamson rejoining the race in fourth. The partnership benefitted when a few front runners were given drive through penalties pushing them up to second they held all the way to the flag.

“When I started I wasn’t too close to the guys in front but I really had to close the gap,” said Marsden of his stint.

“It certainly was an exciting race. Ryan had a fantastic start, he really laid the foundation for me to come in and put my mark down in the second part of the race. The result today was due to my teammate during the first stint, it was a fantastic effort,” said Williamson.

Luck was also on Perry’s side, when he gained two spots after he served his drive through and later after D’Silva, who was running in fourth, spun on the second last lap. Perry was then behind Frank Yee, who looked to be nursing his car, and overtook the Hong Kong driver at the final turn of the last lap to grab the last spot on the podium.

“I started in fifth, the run into turn 1 was a bit hazy actually, there were cars everywhere” said Perry. “It was a hard battle with the guys and it was tough driving out there.”

“Towards the end I just tried to fight as hard as I could and at one point I locked up and heard a bang so I think I took some rubber off but it was still holding. I was chasing Adrian and I was just pushing and pushing and finally he made a mistake and I managed to get by him and chase down Frank. Thank you to the team, they did a great job,” he concluded.
