GSR-Pennzoil: Rejoice but cautious

Published on August 26th, 2009

Gunaseelan Rajoo, GSR-Pennzoil Racing Team’s ace driver, must’ve missed the lady luck’s smooches when he lost out on the first place of the 3rd round in the Malaysian Rally Championship which was held in Johor recently, but he surely did not miss her peck on the cheek by securing second spot and it was enough to see the team scored enough points to stay near the summit for the Drivers and Teams categories of the MRC2009.

Gunaseelan said that although lady luck did not linger around long enough for him to win the race, he was still happy with his performance as vital points were earned. With only two rounds left for the MRC2009 season, Gunaseelan and his team are preparing a battle plan for the next round which will be held in Negeri Sembilan in October.

“We came and we got what we wanted.  I cannot say that it was a disappointing turnout because the most important thing is that we scored as much points as possible.  We are now leading the Drivers championship by a few points ahead of Karamjit Singh, and have also increased our lead in the Constructors (TEAM) category. It’s a good feeling to be on top and I hope we get to maintain this.”

“It could have ended better of course, but the machine was giving some problems initially. So, the complications only made it tougher for me to gain momentum after that. Luckily, the matter was quickly rectified and we were up and about again like usual.”

GSR-Pennzoil Racing Team has been providing other teams a lot of opportunity to eat a little bit of dust here and there. While the race has gotten a little trickier because of the rain on the first day, it is important to collect as many points as possible. GSR-Pennzoil’s strategy has been working so far.

The win is also a sweet one as it was also a good welcome to their new co-sponsor, Firefly (a wholly-owned subsidiary of Malaysia Airline System Berhad), into the team.

“We would like to thank all our other co-sponsors, Pyramid Saimira, Ralliart Malaysia, Ministry of Youth and Sports, Advanti Racing and Yokohama tyres (YHI MALAYSIA) for giving us their full support,” said Gunaseelan.

General Manager of UMW Pennzoil Distributors, Ruslan Abdul Ghani, said that he was very proud of Gunaseelan and the team for giving out a very well-calculated performance at this big event, and securing the lead in the Malaysian Rally Championship for the Drivers and the Teams categories.

“It was indeed a good result for the GSR Pennzoil Racing Team, as we are looking forward to repeating our last year’s results. It’s good to be in the driver’s seat of the championship,” said Ruslan.

Gunaseelan has been in the rally racing picture for a long time now and the speed racer insists that Malaysia have the potential to make it big in rally racing. And he’s certainly walking the talk as the GSR-Pennzoil team owner who has a junior team of drivers of his own, who are making the grade themselves.

“The drivers are all below the age of 25 with the youngest being 18. We are grooming them to become the next Karamjit Singhs. These young drivers will certainly get tremendous exposure and a lot of valuable lessons by pitting themselves against top drivers in the MRC,” added Gunaseelan.
