Green is in with Toyota

Whatever the weather forecast was, UMW Toyota Motor Volunteers stayed the course and lovingly took care of the Mahang seedlings at the newly set up nursery located of all places at UMW Toyota Motor’s head office here in the Klang Valley. Over the last two months, the Toyota volunteers, with their green hands, have been tending to the wildings by watering them daily and carrying out weeding and nurturing activities.

UMW Toyota Motor Sdn Bhd is quite proud with its Community Nursery as it is the first Corporate Community Nursery in Malaysia which was set up in preparation for the replanting activities at the Raja Muda Peat Forest Reserve in Kuala Selangor. This commendable effort is part of the rehabilitation program initiated by Global Environment Centre (GEC) and the Selangor Forestry Department.

President of UMW Toyota Motor Sdn Bhd, Kuah Kock Heng, said, “UMW Toyota Motor has placed a great emphasis on activities that augment its philosophy of giving back to society and being positively committed towards the environment. We have initiated many programs whereby the focus is on creating awareness amongst the public of Malaysia on the importance of the environment.”

He added, “The objective of this nursery project is to grow seedlings here and plant them along the border of the Raja Musa Peat Forest Reserve in Kuala Selangor. It is also to provide an opportunity for UMW Toyota Motor staff to be actively involved in a community program that has a positive impact to the environment.”

Altogether, eighty UMW Toyota Motor staff from UMW Toyota Motor’s head office, manufacturing and other facilities in the Klang Valley readily volunteered for this community project.

Kuah’s take on the nursery was, “I am proud to say that we have 1000 healthy and good seedlings. The team will continue to take care of the seedlings before planting them at the Raja Musa Peat Forest Reserve in November. I am also very happy to note that the Toyota Nursery is the First Corporate Community based nursery for the Raja Muda Musa Peat Forest Reserve Rehabilitation Program.”

Kuah also highlighted and reaffirmed UMW Toyota Motor’s commitment to support the program further by stating, “Our involvement in this project will not end when this first tree planting cycle is over. We intend to have our nursery as an on-going project as the Raja Muda Musa Peat Forest Reserve needs a total of 500,000 seedlings. To this end, we plan to teach schools and other communities to set up their own nurseries.”

Present during this rather green and conservation themed function were Samsu Anuar Bin Nawi, an Assistant Director with the Selangor Forestry Department, Faizal Parish, the Director of Global Environment Centre and about fifty proud volunteers.

At this function as well Kuah took the opportunity to thank the Global Environment Centre and the Selangor Forestry Department by saying, “Together with their expertise and support, our staff volunteers have embarked in this exciting and pioneering project to start a community based nursery.”

Quah also paid tribute to the volunteers for their dedication and good spirits in taking part in the project as their efforts provide for a big contribution to the restoration of Malaysia’s peat forests and ultimately to the preservation of the environment.
