Get your Formula Drift on

Published on October 24th, 2009

The Formula Drift series has been a regular fix at our southern neighbours shores for the last couple of years and those of us that had the double whammy of missing out on it both times can yank their e-brakes as Formula Drift will be sliding into our corner soon.

Building on the success of Formula Drift Singapore, Goodyear and ESPN STAR Sports (ESS) are taking their collaboration to the next level with the inaugural Goodyear Formula Drift Malaysia.

The deets have been hammered out in stone and the extravaganza has been set for the weekend of December 19-20 at the Malaysia Agro Exposition Park Serdang (MAEPS). So before you continue reading this please whip out your calendar and mark those dates down with a bright neon coloured marker and ask your mom to remind you just in case.

Drifters and their machines from all over the Asia-Pacific region will congregate here and push their cars to within hair-widths of the trademark Formula Drift concrete wall. Some of the flags that will be flying during the event include those of Japan, New Zealand, Philippines, Hong Kong, Indonesia Thailand, Singapore and of course the motherland, Malaysia. With over 50 drifters set to slide their sleek machines, rest assured sexcitement will be abundant.

Flying the Jalur Gemilang high will be none other than the Goodyear Drift team compromising of husband and wife duo Ariff Johanis and Jane Cheah together with Michael Gan and Johan Norman.

“We are excited to be part of Goodyear Formula Drift Malaysia. Goodyear is committed to promoting motorsports around the world to greater heights, especially now with drift in the ASEAN region being one of the fastest growing motorsports today,” explained Nasution Abdul Rahman, Managing Director, Goodyear Malaysia.

Testament to the exhilarating performance of Goodyear’s rubbers, all the Goodyear Racing Teams cars will be sporting the Goodyear Eagle RS Sport and Eagle Revspec RS-02 tyres for the event.

“Being involved in racing is part and parcel of Goodyear’s DNA. We’ve developed technologies that were first used for racing, such as tires reinforced with carbon fibre and DuPont Kevlar. These advancements have been incorporated in our products that you see in retail today, such as the Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric. Ultimately, the key benefits obtained from these technologies are passed down to our consumers,” added Nasution.

The Malaysian round of the trifecta will be the climax for the Formula Drift Series in this region that kicked off with the Formula Drift Singapore ProAm Series 2009 in July. Sandwiched between that and the forthcoming Malaysian round will be the Goodyear Formula Drift Thailand round that invades Bangkok over the weekend of November 7-8.

“We are excited to bring the Goodyear Formula Drift event to the Malaysian public following its huge success in Singapore in July. The high caliber of drivers is sure to bring a new level of competition from the world-class field of participants that are scheduled to compete. I’m heartened by the sponsor’s enthusiasm in getting involved to bring this action sports competition to new heights,” said Harvey Davis, Vice-President, ESPN STAR Sports Events Management Group.

ESS is also the official broadcast channel for the Goodyear Formula DRIFT Malaysia and the broadcast of the highlight programme will be shown on ESS’ footprint of 310 million viewers in 24 countries.
