Full wind ahead for Malaysian F1 team

The Malaysian-fueled Lotus F1 Racing Team is revving along to line-up on the grid next year and progress is definitely well ahead of decent with the release some shots depicting the full-scale wind-tunnel model of the car the boys from Hethel will be unleashing hell with on the track.

Motivation will come from a Cosworth heart, in-line with the FIA’s low-cost engine package. Low-cost is a relative term here as Cosworth have a wealth of experience in building proper race engines and in F1 as well.

Helming the team will be Mike Gascoyne as the technical director, himself having been around the F1 pits for some time. Monetary backing and funds are courtesy of a consortium of Malaysian investors including chief sponsor AirAsia, whose owner Datuk Tony Fernandes will temporarily fill the void of team principal, the government, national carmaker and Lotus-owner Proton, Sepang International Circuit as well as motorsports associations. National oil consortium and former Sauber sponsor Petronas could very well jump on the bandwagon.

Currently though the bets are on the drivers that will be driving Malaysia into the annals of F1 with rife speculation that Toyota’s Jarno Trulli, without a drive for next year, will partner Malaysian Fairuz Fauzy, an experienced winner in A1GP, GP2 and the World Series by Renault, for the main slots.

Having some local blood in the driver’s seat would be a very stimulating choice in terms of marketability, sponsorship as well as national pride. Officially the team will be known as the Lotus F1 Racing team, an omniscient choice indeed as Lotus has more history and experience in F1 motor sports than most of the teams currently on the grid could shake a diffuser at. Hence making use of the Lotus name is a given to raise the team’s credibility as well.
