Formula Drift Malaysia: Smokin’ on 18-19 Dec

Published on October 27th, 2010

There’s circuit racing, drag racing, illegal racing, rempit racing and then there’s drifting. It ain’t about how you take ’em corners at near light speed, but drifting is all about letting ’em rear tyres smokin’ ’em white smoke and making sure your steering wheel is facing away from the wall, and it’s called counter-steering.

Call it liquidy-spin or heading down that sideway road, but drifting is a skill where the driver is able to control the vehicle when the car is clearly out of control. Sounds weird? Dude, go watch some drift videos or something… as if you haven’t watch thousand of ’em before.

Goodyear is back with its Formula Drift Malaysia 2010 (Dec 18-19) and this time it’s going to be held right smack in the middle of jam-packed Kuala Lumpur; right in Dataran Merdeka. ESPN Star Sports and title sponsor Goodyear is feeling rather thrilled about having the Formula Drift again this year after their very successful event last year.

Spectators will be able to catch up to 50 drifters from across the Asia-Pacific region, including some familiar international faces like Ryuji Miki from Japan, Daniel Woolhouse from New Zealand, local favourite Ariff Johanis, Azrina Jane, Michael Gan and Hanizam Hamzah or better known as Loyai from Team Goodyear. There will be some fresh faces as well, all game to prove their worth by going sideways.

“We are thrilled to stage another spectacular Goodyear Formula Drift Malaysia event after such a hugely successful showing last year. The high calibre of world-class drivers is testament to the elite level of competition and we’re excited to bring the event closer to spectators at Dataran Merdeka,” said Harvey Davis, Vice President, Event Management Group, ESPN STAR Sports.

Goodyear has been involved in the drift scene since three years ago with the Goodyear Speedfest 2007 in Bukit Jalil, and did not stop there. After that was the Formula Drift Singapore (2008-2010), Formula Drift Thailand (2009-2010) and Formula Drift Malaysia for the second consecutive year.

“Drift in the ASEAN region is one of the fastest growing motorsports in the region today and we’re delighted to be renewing our affiliation with Formula Drift. This year, Team Goodyear Malaysia will be drifting using Goodyear’s Ultra High Performance (UHP) tires – the Eagle F1 Asymmetric tire – designed to enhance driving performance by providing maximum traction especially when taking corners. We are proud to be showcasing the results of these learning at Formula Drift Malaysia,” said Nasution Abdul Rahman, Managing Director of Goodyear Malaysia.

Datuk Seri Ahmad Fuad Ismail, Mayor of Kuala Lumpur is pleased with the continuation of Formula Drift.

“I am extremely pleased to see events such as Goodyear Formula Drift event take place once again on Malaysian shores. Not only does this increase the profile of our country in hosting international events and as a major motorsport hub, it energizes our sporting calendar and indirectly contributes to our tourism initiatives which benefits not only sports fans but the entire country,” he said.

The Goodyear Formula Drift Malaysia will be the climax of the three-part Formula Drift Series, which blasted off with the Formula Drift Singapore ProAm Series 2010 in April, followed by the upcoming Goodyear Formula Drift Thailand on November 20 – 21, to be held in Bangkok. The Goodyear Formula Drift Malaysia is organized by ESS and supported by Goodyear as the Title Sponsor. The event is supported by BHPetrol as Main Sponsor, MYEG as Presentation Sponsor, and Mazda as the official car (by the official franchise holder and importer, Bermaz/Prima Merdu). ESPN STAR Sports is the official broadcaster for the Goodyear Formula DRIFT Malaysia, and highlights will be aired across its network, covering 24 countries to a cumulative reach of more than 300 million viewers in Asia.
