First-ever reality TV programme in Malaysia to identify best local inventors launched!

The Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI), SIRIM Berhad and PROTON today launched the first-ever local reality TV programme to identify the best invention or innovation with potential to penetrate the market.

The programme, IDEA: MALAYSIAN INVENTORS’ CHALLENGE will be aired on TV3 starting this coming 25th September in an effort to support and promote creativity and innovation among Malaysian. It will held in conjucntion with the Malaysia Inovatif 2010’s celebration.

The reality TV programme was officiated by MOSTI’s Deputy Minister, YB Hj. Fadillah Yusof at Sri Pentas, Bandar Utama. He also bear witnessed to the document exchange ceremony, Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between PROTON and SIRIM Berhad for organizing the TV programme.

PROTON was represented by  Group Managing Director, Dato’ Hj. Syed Zainal Abidin Syed Mohamed Tahir while SIRIM, by the President and Chief Executive, Ir. Hj. Yahaya Ahmad. SIRIM, an organization in charge of research and technology development in the country  as the sponsor of the invention and innovation challenge competition for the reality TV programme while the national car manufacturer PROTON, as the title sponsor for the MOSTI-developed programme.

The 10-episode Reality TV programme will be featuring 24 participations in the challenge of developing innovation and the best invention along with the hardship, joy and disappointment during the show. It will be aired every Saturday at 7pm for half an hour starting this coming 25th September 2010.

During the launch, the hosts, Daphne Iking and the National Astronaut, Mejar Dr. Faiz Khaled was introduced. Panel judges lined-up of professionals in various field were also introduced.

Fadillah said that, “IDEA: MALAYSIAN INVENTORS’ CHALLENGE is an example of government and private sector’s cooperation in the search of innovation from the grassroots, in which has the potentials to be commercialized locally and internationally.”

He also said that MOSTI will be giving their full support to all 24 participation regardless if it’s individuals or even groups, giving them the chance to be reviewed to receive grants from the ministry in order to develop their inventions and innovations to a higher level.

“All 24 participation in the programme will have the chance to receive grants from MOSTI, however they must be eligible to ensure the end products are of quality and potential to be commercialized,” he added.

SIRIM will be guiding these young inventors to enhance their skills with technical and expertise until they manage to produce fully functional prototype capable to be commercialized, said Ir. Hj. Yahaya.

“We want to encourage Malaysians especially the younger generation to produce more innovation or inventions from the grass root level,” he added.

Group Managing Director of PROTON Holdings Berhad, Dato’ Haji Syed Zainal Abidin Syed Mohamed Tahir said that, ”PROTON is grateful to be given the opportunity to be the main sponsor of the reality TV programme. IDEA:MALAYSIAN INVENTORS’ CHALLENGE also has the support from Malaysian Productivity Corporation (MPC) which will be contributing its professional expertise in terms of creativity and productivity in the judging session along with consultation to the participants.

The selection to finalize the 24 participants into the reality TV programme will kick off this coming 25th September in front Hotel MS Garden, Kuantan followed by the next round on 2nd October at Hotel Grand Borneo, Kota Kinabalu, 9th October at SIRIM, Shah Alam and 16th October in Kuching. Participants will be selected via consultation session at the very location a day after the selection.

Then all 24 participants (individual or group) will be gathered in Shah Alam to go through incubator session for a day to complete their  invention for the competition day held on 28th October 2010 at SIRIM, Shah Alam.

Four participants will be shortlisted to compete in the finals on 30th October 2010. Prior to that, all four finalists will be going through another incubator session with professional advisors for tips to improvise their inventions before being judged by the panel of judges.

Reality programme TV IDEA: MALAYSIAN INVENTORS’ CHALLENGE is open to all Malaysian grassroots inventors (non-professional) regardless of the age factor. They only need to bring their model or prototype of own innovation or inventions to any sessions of selection, or register at www.1Idea.com.my
