EUROFORMULA in the race : Mid-season review

Published on June 28th, 2011

Many young drivers have benefitted from the training put in place by the TCD (Training and Competition Department) and some, like Paul Loup Chatin, have taken part in the “EUROFORMULA VOLANT”. In 2011, the winner of this VOLANT will also receive a bursary of € 60,000. Alumni are taking part this year in major international championships and we have here a review of their mid-season performances:

FORMULA RENAULT 3.5: The expert opinion is that it is a very high quality championship and the battles for victory have been heated.

Nelson Panciatici: He has scored highly in nearly every race, most notably with a podium in Alcaniz but two abandons and a zero point at Nurburgring have cost him dear. He is actually 9th in the provisional general ranking but anything is still possible looking at the performances he has displayed so far.

Jean Eric Vergne: His team, Carlin, have dominated the championship and they hold the two top places in the provisional general ranking. Actually second, Jean Eric is very likely to win the title but he will especially have to watch his co-driver, Robert Wickens, who is always pushing him to his limits.

André Negrao and Stéphane Richelmi: “Rookies” in the discipline and co-drivers in the same Draco Racing team, they have alternated between good and not so good. But André and Stéphane have shown they’ve got the top speed. They should get some good results in the second half of the championship.

INDIANAPOLIS 500: “The” mythical American race and Bertrand Baguette was part of it.

Bertrand BAGUETTE: His feat behind the wheel of his Rahal Letterman Lanigan team car managed by the experienced Bobby Rahal was to start in 14th position and move to first place five laps from the finish, that was when he had to refuel with just three laps left to drive. He finally crossed the line in a handsome 7th place.

FORMULA RENAULT 2.0: The “EUROFORMULA VOLANT” 2010, Paul Loup Chatin is taking part in the Eurocup and ALPS Championship along with Yann Zimmer.

Paul Loup Chatin: Although just short of success in the Eurocup where he is building on his performance without getting the results, the “EUROFORMULA VOLANT” has stepped up on the podium six times in the ALPS Championship. This puts him in 3rd place in the provisional general ranking, 22 points behind the leader, the young Yann ZIMMER.

Yann Zimmer : Still the favourite to win the ALPS 2011 Championship where he is first in the provisional general ranking with 5 podiums and one victory. He will have to watch Paul Loup Chatin and also of his fast co-driver in the heart of the ARTA team, Melville Mckee is very fast.

FRENCH F4 CHAMPIONSHIP: Truly a springboard for young drivers, the fight for victory is challenged at every meeting.

Pierre Sancinena: With 4 podiums, two of which are victories, Pierre is actually in second place in the provisional general ranking and only an abandon stopped him from taking the lead. His main priority to win the title is still totally feasible for the second half of the season.

Jordan Perroy: A diligent student of the EUROFORMULA school, Jordan is in 11th place in the provisional general ranking, which is respectable for a first year in single-seater. He should be able to step up on the podium.

LE MANS 24 HOURS: Is a mythical challenge that many drivers dream of taking part in, Andréa Barlesi made his dream come true behind the wheel of an LMP2 OAK Racing team.

Andréa Barlesi: He lost a lot of time in the stands because of a broken rear suspension following a nudge from one of his co-drivers, Andréa finished in 7th place in LMP2 and despite his difficulties during this Le Mans 24 Hours, he has promised to return until he wins!

Laurent Fradon, the Director of EUROFORMULA, therefore has a few satisfactions to highlight: “We are very happy with the overall results our past students have achieved, everything is still possible in their conquests for titles, podiums or victories, and we are going to follow the rest of the season with great interest!”
