Lexus Malaysia has officially launched the new Lexus RC this week. The new model replaces the IS coupe in name and overall package as it is geared towards a more performance oriented image rather than the staid and laid-back Lexus IS.
At the launch event, Lexus Malaysia announced that 2 models of the RC coupe would be represented here in Malaysia which is the normal Lexus RC 350 Luxury coupe and the newly developed Lexus RCF.
The former is geared towards someone who wants a more relaxing drive and the newly developed Lexus RC F is more geared towards someone who wants a bit more hardcore set-up in their daily lives. This new model has ambitions to challenge the status quo of the Germans.
Like earlier said, the garden variety RC 350 in Luxury trim combines both elegance and sportiness to further accentuate its GT feel to the whole car. The RC F meanwhile adopt a more sportiness elegance in its design concept.
Both cars have a Smart Access keyless entry system, a 17-speaker Mark-Levinson that provides a 3D 360 degree angle of spatial sound, a new Lexus RTI interface touchpad and state-of-the-art Multi LED headlamps with LED Daytime Running Lights.
Safety wise for the RC F and RC 350 Luxury, it has a large high-performance brake system for the RC F, ABS with Brake Assist, Vehicle Stability Control, Traction Control, Electronic Brake-force Distribution, Hill-Start Assist Control, Tyre Pressure Warning System and a Whiplash Injury Lessening front seats.
This is complimented by an active safety feature of Blind Spot Monitoring System, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Hill-start Assist Control, Reverse Camera and Tyre Pressure Warning System. The RC F also has an optionally available carbon fibre reinforced plastic kit developed for the Lexus LFA and IS F CCS-R racing car that adds an aggressive dimension to the looks while saving around 9.5kg of weight. The RC F also has a first of its class Torque Vectoring Differential that is applied in a Front-Engine Rear-Wheel Drive format.
As with its model designation the RC 350 is powered by Lexus own 3.5-litre V6 with Dual VVT-i that has a maximum output of 312 hp available at 6,400 rpm and 378 Nm of torque at 4,800 rpm powering the rear-wheels using an 8-speed Sports Program Direct Shift automatic transmission with a sequential manual shifting also available.
This ensures the coupe to accelerate to the magical 100km/h barrier at 6.3 seconds and having a top speed of 230 km/h. The RC F’s engine mechanicals share the same with the IS F which is the 2UR-GSE 5.0 litre V8 32-valve engine that has a rated power output of 470 hp and 530 Nm of torque. The engine in the RC F is different from the IS F in that it has a switchable Otto and Atkinson cycle mode to increase fuel economy and performance. This results in an increased performance that is 12% better making it the most powerful production V8 engine from Lexus. Both variants also have selected drive modes that changes the vehicle parameters to suit the drivers demands.
Six exterior colours are available for the RC F which are Radiant Red, Starlight Black, Sonic Silver, White Nova, Lava, Orange and Heat Blue while the colours available for the RC 350 Luxury are the White Pearl, Sonic Titanium, Radiant Red and Starlight Black. The red finish on both variants has been specially developed for the model.
It has a five-layer coating that includes a vibrant undercoat and clear coat, providing an overall effect that gives a stunning, sensuous nuance to the vehicle’s contoured surfaces. The painting technique, called contrast layering, was pioneered on concept vehicles and is a Lexus first for mass production.
The Lexus RC 350 Luxury and Lexus RC F comes in Malaysia with a price tag of RM 532,000 and RM 728,000 respectively to ensure it is primely positioned against its intended competitors.
