DOUBLE JOY FOR PROTON’S FINAL CAR MAKEOVERS

Published on April 5th, 2012

PROTON’s inaugural “My PROTON Makeover” competition culminated in the joyful announcement of the last two car makeover winners, 36 year-old IT consultant, Amirul Azim Mohd Hussain, and 54 year-old home maker Lee Koon Gaik.

After a series of four successful competition rounds of story submission and car makeovers, the final fifth and sixth cars have been handed over to PROTON’s R3 unit for refurbishment.

“As this competition was initiated as part of our “Commitment to be Better” brand promise to improve customer service, we wanted to acknowledge and reward faithful customers of PROTON who have supported us over the last 26 years. It is a privilege to see the testimonies of these two proud Proton car owners who have stayed loyal to us for so long and we are honoured to be able to give back to them with these makeovers,” said Mr. John D. Chacko, PROTON’s Director of Group Marketing, Branding and Motorsports.

“We would like to convey our congratulations to Amirul Azim and Madam Lee on their winning submissions for the final rounds of this makeover programme. Both their story entries clearly showed their love for their cars and were very encouraging to the panel of judges as it represented their confidence in the PROTON brand,” Chacko added.

Satria owner Amirul Azim’s devotion was obvious as he described his relationship with his one and only car. The car has seen him through thick and thin over his many life changes – from his bachelor days, into his marriage and now, 11 years later, the Satria is still his faithful companion as Amirul reaches fatherhood. He also attests to being an avid car lover and collector, albeit on a smaller scale, with a fondness for Hot Wheels die-cast toy cars.

While she has had a different experience with her car, home maker Madam Lee shares the same sentimental values towards her Proton Saga, a gift from her husband 20 years ago. The car has been her loyal and trustworthy workhorse and companion, helping her see her sons to school, college and their early working life. A one-car owner, Madam Lee believes that her Proton Saga is the car of a lifetime, having even declined the government’s voluntary scrapping incentive for a new Proton in 2009.

“With my Proton Saga, I do not need any other car,” said Madam Lee proudly, when handing it in for the makeover. “Even with the common wear and tear over the past 20 years, I am still able to rely on it to get me around – and I’m happy to be able to treat it to a little pampering with this wonderful makeover opportunity.”

The 2001 Proton Satria and 1991 Proton Saga will each receive a new breath of life as they enter the R3 workshop for a period of refurbishment. Speaking on behalf of PROTON Motorsports, Head of Engineering at the R3 unit Tengku Djan Ley Tengku Mahaleel said that the team has their work cut out for them for the finale of this programme.

“The two cars have served their owners well, and are in need of major refurbishment. However, to keep on schedule, as much as the team is enjoying themselves revamping these old cars, they will be pushing themselves to ensure these cars get the best treatment and are delivered on time to their owners.” said Tengku Djan Ley.

“As both owners utilize their cars daily with their families, our focus will be to make certain that the cars perform with greater reliability, efficiency and safety, and that they will stay on the road for a long while to come,” he added.

“My PROTON Makeover” initiative required submissions of personal and heart-warming stories involving contestants and their PROTON cars, with the best stories winning a complete car makeover.
